Job summary

We are looking for a compassionate and quality driven Consultant Clinical Oncologist colleague to join our Oncology team.

This new fixed term post offers an exciting opportunity to support and further develop our Onoclogy service, including HPB and lung cancer and developing the cancer frailty pathway.

The appointee will work closely with our existing Oncologists, our CNSs, ward staff and the wider multidisciplinary teams, to deliver high-quality oncological care.

The day to day work of the successful applicant will be located in the Macmillan Unit at the West Suffolk Hospital, supported by our excellent CNSs AOS team and the ward team. There are no on call duties, however there may be the need to cover the occasional bank holiday.

Candidates should be on or eligible for inclusion onto the GMC Specialist or be within 6 months of their expected date of obtaining a CCT (or equivalent) at the time of the interview.

Main duties of the job

This post arises as a consequence of developments in oncology to develop a frailty pathway and requiring more subspecialised skills in lung and HPB oncology and increased workload within the department at West Suffolk Hospital.

At the West Suffolk there is a major oncology commitment to the management of urological, breast, colorectal, lung and upper gastrointestinal cancers, and lymphoma. It is expected that the appointee will jointly manage the lung and HPB cancer practice at West Suffolk with Dr Patterson. There may be the possibility of the post holder being able to undertake radiotherapy and a sub-specialist out-patient clinic at Addenbrookes. Other interests may be accommodated by negotiation. The successful post holder would be expected to see approximately 250 new patient referrals per annum.

In the event of the successful applicant choosing to work part time, the priority will lie with the management of lung and HPB at West Suffolk, the post holder will be expected to cross cover his or her oncology colleagues at the West Suffolk and to provide general oncology cover for that hospital including the management of patients with cancer of unknown primary. There are established multidisciplinary teams with weekly multidisciplinary meetings (MDTs) in all of the above subspecialties at both hospital

The post has no regular out of hours (evening or weekend) commitment, although the post holder will be required to participate in any bank holiday cover rotas for both hospital

Ward referrals are shared between the relevant site-specific Consultants.

MDT meetings are held weekly and the SMDT meetings are teleconferenced with Addenbrookes and Papworth Hospitals.

At CUH the post holder will undertake radiotherapy and a sub-specialist out-patient clinic.

Administrative

The appointee will be expected to do patient-related administrative work for their clinical workload. This will include using the electronic patient record and other IT systems at both hospitals and using remote access. They will be expected to join in departmental management meetings. The appointee will, with time, be encouraged to take on management roles where appropriate within the Oncology Department.

The appointee will be encouraged to take an active role in any relevant Trust committees or sub-committees and any local or regional oncology meetings.

Job Plan

A job plan will be agreed with the post holder. This plan will be reviewed annually and will provide an opportunity for discussion of the individuals personal development plan and for appraisal. Annual review will be used to check that the record of fixed and flexible sessions is accurate and compliant with the EWTD; covers on-call commitments and is compatible with the agreed template for the specialty and that any problems arising can be resolved. This also provides an opportunity for constructive debate about the individuals personal development plan including CPD and any evolving special interests, which the appointee may wish to pursue.

Clinical Governance/Audit is undertaken as an ongoing programme within the Region. It is expected that the appointee will be actively involved in this.

Mentoring

The new appointee will be supported and mentored for the first six months of the post this will be provided by one of the consultants in the department, depending on the appointees choice.
