Job summary

Applications are invited for a Locum SPR in Emergency Medicine to join an existing team at the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds, days and sessions can be flexible to suit.

This is an exciting opportunity for a SPR to work with a strong team to provide a high-quality, SPR-led clinical Emergency service for West Suffolk. The post is primarily in the Emergency Department.

Please note that we are unable to support sponsorship roles on Bank as we are not able to guarantee hours.

Hourly Pay

Core hours - 7.00 a.m. - 7.00 p.m. (Monday - Friday) - £75 p/h

Unsocial hours -7.00 p.m. - 7.00 a.m. (including Bank Holidays and Weekends) - £85 p/h

Main duties of the job

Key Tasks Could include the below:

o You will be part of the multidisciplinary clinical team as middle grade in the Emergency Department.

o Provide high quality care, knowledge, and skill for the patients either directly or by supervision and floor management of the junior clinical staff

o To maintain the standards of the College of Emergency Medicine and the West Suffolk Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

o To assume clinical responsibility for patients brought to the department by the emergency services, self-referring or referred by GP

o You are expected to deal with unexpected emergencies including those resulting from infectious diseases like COVID-19

o To be part of Trauma Team co-ordinated management of major trauma

o To be immediately available for opinion, guidance and advice on any patient seen by a junior clinician in the ED at any time during the rostered duty shift

o To assist in conducting follow-up review of patients where considered appropriate by the Consultants

o To contribute to the production of departmental clinical management guidelines in line with evidence-based best practice

o To attend in the event of a hospital Major Incident call if available and off duty

o Maintain patient confidentiality

o Identify and act appropriately upon Safeguarding issues in children appropriately

Essential

  • Full registration with the GMC and hold a Licence to Practise at time of starting the post.
  • Must have three years aggregate hospital experience at SHO/F2 level or higher grades, at least six months of which should be in Emergency Medicine.

Desirable

  • Experience of working in UK or EEC hospitals for three years aggregate at SHO/F2 level or higher grades, at least six months of which should be in Emergency Medicine.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Part A or equivalent of Emergency Medicine examinations

Desirable

  • Primary FRCEM

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Competence in basic clinical procedures
  • Able to prioritise clinical needs.
  • Aware of own limitations and knows when to consult senior colleagues.
  • Understands the importance of working effectively in teams.
  • Ability to assess, recognise and initiate management of the acutely ill patient.
  • Play an effective part in advanced life support.
  • ATLS or ALS

Desirable

  • Knowledge and understanding of UK health systems.
