B6 Occupational Therapist
Part time or Full time, Permanent, Hazell Court, Sudbury
The opportunity has arisen to grow our Occupational Therapy service at the West Suffolk Foundation Trust with the Community Assessment Beds (CAB) team.
These community assessment beds provide ongoing assessment for patients following an inpatient admission at the acute hospital, or occasionally as admissions directly from the community. You would work within the multidisciplinary team at sites across West Suffolk (including care homes) to help those that are transitioning from an acute environment who require additional support and assessment prior to being discharged.
We will offer the successful candidates the opportunity to broaden their clinical practice, knowledge and skills with using evidence-based practice to help ensure the quality of service delivery meets the requirements of the patients and service. The post holder will support occupational therapy apprentice and other students as part of our wider programme. Promoting the role of occupational therapy within the Trust, and more widely is an essential part of the role.
The occupational therapy department is part of Integrated Therapy Services, and forms part of the wider West Suffolk Alliance. We are committed to professional development and evidence-based practice.
Main duties of the job
This post would be suitable for someone seeking to develop their occupational therapy clinical and leadership skills at band 6 level, or as a developmental role for an existing Band 5. We would also consider experienced staff who are returning to practice.
The post holder will enjoy working as part of a team player, and would suit someone who is forward thinking, conscientious, and motivated to work autonomously and holistically.You will benefit from working in a very supportive CAB team, department and NHS Trust that advocates continuous improvement and training opportunities to help develop our staff. You will be provided with regular supervision from an experienced clinical specialist occupational therapist.

Clinical and Professional
- To be professionally accountable for all aspects of your own work including the management of patients in your care, always complying with HCPC standards of conduct, the RCOT Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and the Professional Standards for Occupational Therapy Practice.
- To ensure a high standard of clinical care for the patients under your management and support staff to do likewise.
- To employ professional judgement to establish a level of consent and to work within the Trust and departmental policy to treat patients lacking the capacity to provide consent.
- To undertake complex, comprehensive assessments of patients using investigative, observational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. To formulate individualised treatment and management plans using advanced clinical reasoning.
- To communicate effectively with patients and carers, ensuring understanding of the conditions, aim of therapy treatment and progression. A high level of skill and empathy is required to communicate effectively with patients who have complex emotional, physical and psychological problems and carers/family members who may be emotionally impacted.
To attend family meetings and case conferences and support team members with this as required.
- To be responsible for accessing confidential information via IT systems and recording patient contact data for statistical analysis and audit purposes.
To actively use patient and service outcome measures, inputting these on both e-care and within the occupational therapy documentation or Trust QI platforms.
- To provide expert intervention with patients using therapy techniques, specialist equipment and therapeutic handling. To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to patients, carers, other team members including students to enable progression, discharges, or onward referrals.
- To communicate effectively and work collaboratively in a positive manner with all other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure the safe delivery of co-ordinated and seamless care. This will include sharing assessment findings, goals and plans, outcomes of treatment, personal and clinical details. Referral on to other agencies is an essential part of this role.
To participate in CAB team meetings and lead in the absence of the CAB team lead. To also represent the wider Trust and alliance meeting as requested from the CAB lead.
