The paediatric departments at West Suffolk Hospital provide care to children and young people aged 0-16yrs across a range of medical and surgical specialities including, medicine, surgery, ENT & orthopaedics.

We are looking for a Passionate band 7 Paediatric Cardiology Clinical Nurse Specialist who is committed to working within our unit and to upholding the values of West Suffolk Hospital. As a Paediatric Cardiology - CNS, you will be responsible for ensuring high quality standards of care at WSFT. This role will also aspire to link our Paediatric Cardiology Service at WSFT with ESNFT and is an opportunity to help lead our vision for integration for Paediatric Cardiology, the ability to work across both sites is essential for this role.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will play a key role in the Paediatric team; providing quality family-centered care to our patients and their families and be able to demonstrate excellent communication and clinical skills.
  • You will act as an expert nurse in the provision of effective care for children with cardiac problems in partnership with their families, both in the hospital and in the community.
  • You will liaise and co-ordinate multidisciplinary team functions in association with the lead consultant and provide supervision and advice where appropriate to nurses and other practitioners working within children's services.
  • The post holder will exercise a high degree of professional and personal autonomy utilising skills, knowledge and assessment in the areas of decision-making in consultation with the lead consultant. This includes nurse-led clinics.
  • Encourage and promote continual quality improvement and implementation of evidence-based practice. Initiate, implement and evaluate programmes of ongoing improvements and where necessary facilitate and manage change.
  • Keep up-to-date with developments in the field of cardiology, to be an effective resource for families and professionals.
  • Be aware of local and national policies and priorities that relate to children's nursing, identifying issues that are applicable to own specialist area.

Manage own caseload of patients, including non-medical prescribing, working within remit of own professional registration, national legislation and working within Trust policies and guidance

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individual programmes of care for a caseload of patients. This will necessitate working as a specialist practitioner and will include high levels of autonomy

Act as a role model for excellence and expertise in nursing, in all environments, locally, trust-wide, liaising with other providers / external agencies. Using analytical and judgment skills to assess children/ young people, select, carry out and interpret the end results of specific tests.

To provide up to date education and expert advice for healthcare professionals including doctors, nurses, social workers, school staff and others to ensure they are able to support patients from diagnosis, in hospital and the community.

To maintain high standards of cardiology practice, the post holder will identify gaps in current service provision and contribute to the specialist policy and protocol development and implementation to ensure effective, efficient patient pathways for the cardiology service.

To be accessible to children and parents for advice regarding management of their condition and to support other members of the MDT with challenging or difficult communications whether face to face or through alternative methods of communication.

  1. Leadership
