Job summary

Suffolk Communication Aids Resource Centre (SCARC) is a unique and exciting service offering communication aids to young people aged 0-25 across Suffolk. SCARC is part of Integrated Community Paediatric Services (ICPS) within West Suffolk Foundation Trust (WSFT). The role of Specialist Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) is an amazing opportunity to work within and help develop the SCARC service. This role focuses primarily on clinical assessment, identification of and supporting the therapeutic intervention of Voice Output Communication Aids (VOCA). SCARC additionally offers training to families and a range of professionals post VOCA provision and you will enhance your already developed skills in preparing and presenting training support to those supporting young people with a VOCA. You will also develop your skills in setting up, identifying communication aid software/ vocabulary and programming VOCA, ready to support the communication needs of young people in Suffolk. If you are a team player, have excellent communication skills and are keen to develop a specialism in supporting young people with Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) then this is the role for you. It will give you a unique opportunity to help give young people a voice in Suffolk and develop the skills of those who support them.

Main duties of the job

The role of Specialist Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) is an amazing opportunity to work within and help develop the SCARC service. SCARC focuses primarily on clinical assessment, identification of and supporting the therapeutic intervention of Voice Output Communication Aids (VOCA). We support young people across Suffolk, and in the environment most suitable to them. As a result, whilst we are based at Thomas Wolsey Ormiston Academy (TWOA) in Ipswich, the role involves travelling across Suffolk and surrounding areas.

SCARC offers a range of training to families and other professions, and you will enhance your already developed skills in preparing and presenting training to those supporting young people with a VOCA and in AAC. You will also develop your skills in setting up, identifying communication aid software/ vocabulary and programming VOCA, ready to support the communication needs of young people in Suffolk. The role involves supporting the maintenance and provision of VOCA equipment including developing your skills in managing Information Technology (IT) queries relating to VOCAs. These skills will be supported and developed with SCARC's Communication Aids Practitioner (CAP).
