Job summary

(Pre-registration Trainee) Pharmacy Technician Apprentice (x2) Year 1- 70% Band 4 and Year 2- 75% Band 4 2 Year Fixed Term 37.5 hours per week

Pharmacy technicians are vital members of the pharmacy team and play an important role in the day to day management of medicines for all patients in todays NHS.

We are looking for positive, supportive, good with time keeping and trustworthy individuals with a genuine passion for patient care to join us in a rewarding role within a fast-paced working environment as an apprentice Pharmacy Technician. You will be part of a friendly supportive team, consisting of Pharmacists, Technicians and Assistants, and have access to a range of employee benefits and be given education and training to support your apprenticeship which once complete will allow for registration with the GPhC (Regulatory body for Pharmacies) and start you in a Pharmacy career with many rewarding and varied pathways.

The apprenticeship course curriculum will be delivered by the UEA and will be covered in a mix of work based learning and academic study days. Based over 4 learning modules this apprenticeship will provide you with the underpinning knowledge and skill set necessary for you to optimise patients use of medications, communicate with patients and other healthcare professionals, make a safe supply of medications and provide safe and effective person-centred care.

As a Pharmacy Technician Apprentice, you will be trained with the knowledge and skills to optimise patients use of medicines.

In the dispensary to dispense medication, receive and validate prescriptions, communicate with patients and other healthcare professionals.

In the ward setting: Work as part of a multi-professional team to check patients own drugs and supply medications for individuals, take patient drug histories, undertake medicines reconciliation, counsel patients on the use of their medicines as required under supervision of a Pharmacist or Pharmacy Technician.

You will also be expected to develop leadership skills that reflect the regulatory requirements of the profession.

Successful completion of this apprenticeship in Pharmacy Technician Practice will enable you to apply for registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council.

KEY TASKS:

West Suffolk Hospital Placement

1. Dispensary:

a. Dispense accurately and self-check yourself, items for in-patients and outpatients (in accordance with written procedures)

b. Accuracy check clinical screened prescriptions, under supervision.

c. Dispense to-follow items in accordance with written procedures.

d. Dispense controlled drugs (in accordance with written procedures), under supervision.

e. Undertake counselling of patients.

f. Receptionist duties, when necessary including dealing with internal and external customers, receiving cash, credit cards and cheques for payment and operating the dispensary till. Receiving and validating prescriptions. Occasionally delivering of medication to wards.

g. Operate the dispensary computer system for the purposes of dispensing medication and occasional stock transfers.

h. To assist in stock management including date checking; recalls and alerts.

i. Undertake CD checks and reconcile discrepancies

2. Wards:

a. Assess the suitability of patients own medication as part of the Drug History and Medicines Reconciliation process, and discharge process.

b. Complete accurate drug history and Medicines Reconciliation including retrieving information from medical notes and obtaining information from relevant GPs.

c. Ensure that patients receive the correct supply of medication as prescribed on drug charts.

d. Counsel patients regarding their medication, identifying problems in regards to compliance and working with the patient to obtain a positive result.

e. To be responsible for ensuring that medicines, which are returned to pharmacy from wards, are either returned to stock or disposed of in accordance with current procedures.

f. To maintain up to date handover to ensure effective communication to other pharmacy staff.

g. Support with the transfer of information across the interface of care.

General Duties:

a. To participate in the Department Saturday, Sunday, Bank Holiday and late rotas.

a. To keep up to date with and follow SOPs

b. To ensure that statutory requirements are met at all times and to implement Trust policy as directed by the Head of Pharmacy Services.

c. To attend relevant training courses as appropriate.

d. To undertake other reasonable duties within the framework of the post as directed by the Head of Pharmacy Services.

e. To document errors and support process review and improvement to reduce internal and external error rates in accordance with clinical governance guidelines

f. Act professional at all times, refer when necessary and ask questions, know your own limits of authority

g. To take responsibility for specific areas of work or projects as may be agreed from time to time, including contributing towards team goals and objectives.

h. To assist with the cleaning and maintenance of the work areas, equipment and clothing.

i. To ensure a tidy work environment, so that space is effectively utilised and bench space is kept clear and clean so good dispensing practice is maintained this includes stock rotation and expiry checks

j. To ensure all complaints about the service are recorded and dealt with effectively and promptly according to procedure.

k. To undertake any other duties commensurate with the job role.
