Job summary

The West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust are offering a great opportunity to join our Integrated Clinical Education Team (ICET).

The Care Certificate is a mandatory requirement for all Healthcare Support Workers (HCSW) working within the organisation and the postholder will provide support and guidance to all new employees undertaking this programme.

The Care Certificate Support Worker (CCSW) will work alongside other members of the education team to provide all new HCSWs with education and training based on best practice and in line with the Care Certificate standards.

The postholder will work across all settings in both the acute and community environments including adult, child, maternity, and therapies.

This is a full-time position working Monday Friday 08:00 16:00.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work alongside all new HCSW employees within clinical environments providing clinical expertise and pastoral support. Good communication skills will be essential to build relationships with clinical areas and managers whilst always promoting best practice.

The postholder will contribute to elements of teaching within both the classroom and clinical setting and training will be provided to support this.

The CCSW will assist HCSWs in the delivery of a high standard of patient care in all activities of daily living, as directed in the individual plan of care needs, observing, and reporting specific changes to senior staff and documenting care given.

Assessment of competency and guiding HCSWs with the completion of their workbook will be part of the role.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities:

1. Communication:

a) To develop and maintain good working relationships with the managers and teams of clinical areas used for training

b) Communicate effectively and sensitively with patients, relatives, and colleagues, referring to senior staff as necessary, recognising needs for alternative methods of communication.

c) To report promptly any concerns including performance issues to the manager of the clinical area and the Head of Clinical Education or Deputy Clinical Education Lead

d) To attend and participate in the Integrated Clinical Education Team meetings as required

e) Maintain accurate documentation and records

2. Training and teaching:

a) Work alongside new Healthcare Support Workers and role model evidence based, best practice within the clinical environment

b) Be able to explain and discuss the Care Certificate programme requirements

c) Provide appropriate information, support and advice on education and training issues specific to new Healthcare Support Workers and escalate to Deputy Clinical Education Lead and Head of Clinical Education as required

d) Share good practices across the Trust about supporting learning and improving the quality of care

e) Support clinical teams to help their new Healthcare Support Worker to feel a valued and competent member of the team

3. Privacy, dignity, and equality:

a) Act to promote patients equality, diversity, and rights always

b) Ensure provision of privacy and dignity in all activities

c) Ensure all care is person centred and delivered with the informed consent of the patient

d) Act to promote active participation for patients under the care of the Trust

e) Maintain confidentiality of patient information at all times

4. Clinical Duties:

To work alongside new Healthcare Support Workers and assist in the delivery of a high standard of patient care in all activities of daily living, as directed in the individual plan of care needs, observing, and reporting specific changes to senior staff and documenting care given. To include the following:

Hygiene

Assist patients with the maintenance of their personal and oral hygiene, including:

Washing and bathing

Mouth and dental care

Hair-washing

Nail care

Shaving

Dressing and undressing

Observe and report any changes/damage to patients skin to identify pressure ulcer risk.

Elimination

Assist patients to use toilet facilities.

Record and monitor output; identify and report any abnormalities in body waste.

Undertake established stoma care and long-term catheter care.

Mobility

Assist patients with mobility using manual handling risk assessment and safe manual handling.

Contribute to the movement and positioning of patients (using safe moving and handling techniques), to maximise their physical comfort and prevent the adverse effects of pressure.

Be aware of how equipment works and report any faults.

Nutrition

Assist patients to eat and drink as per identified care needs, identifying, recording and reporting abnormal dietary and fluid intake.

Assist patients with the completion of menus.

Clinical Activities

Measure and observe the physical characteristics/condition of patients as follows:

Temperature

Pulse

Respiration

Blood pressure

Peak flows

Weight and girth

Obtain specimens as requested and carry out relevant investigations, e.g., urinalysis and document the results, reporting them to registered practitioner as necessary.

Prepare and support patients undergoing clinical activities and recovering from clinical interventions. Accompany patients to other wards/departments as required.

Undertake end of life care, providing support to family and colleagues.

Undertake basic cleaning and decontamination of communal equipment between patient use and/or storage.
