Job summary

We are looking for a compassionate, highly motivated Gynaecology and Early Pregnancy Sister to join our team at the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. You should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a genuine passion for caring for women undergoing a range of early pregnancy complications and gynaecology issues.

You will be working alongside a supportive and committed MDT. The service ethos is to provide time-critical rapid assessment ofwomen within a one-stop clinical model, in close liaison with our ED and GP colleagues. The successful candidate ideally should have knowledge and experience of gynaecology and early pregnancy management and treatment pathways.

We run a Gynaecology Assessment Unit (GAU) and Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (EPAU) side-by-side on the 8 bedded gynaecology ward. Within this unit we also encompass a termination service, which you will expected to partake in.

Excellent teamwork skills are vital to allow collaboration across the team and the ability to manage your own workload is essential. As a sister you would be expected to take the role of nurse in charge on some of your shifts.

Our unit delivers specialist, evidence-based, holistic care to women with early pregnancy complications and emergency gynaecological conditions in an environment that supports patient choice and dignity. Our team consists of Consultant Gynaecologists, a specialist nurseand specialist sonographers.

Main duties of the job

You will be expected to:

Run the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit clinics, working with a sonographer to evaluate, plan and implement care for women who are experiencing early pregnancy complications such as miscarriage or ectopic.

Run the Gynaecology Assessment Unit in evaluating, planning, and implementing care to a group of women who attend for early pregnancy complications and genecology issues. You will be expected to undertake nurse led triaging of patients through the service, following local and national policy, working alongside our team of gynaecology Doctors.

Work in our termination clinics which currently runs twice a week.

To take an active role in service improvement and audit of the service. You will also take on the role of nurse in charge and oversee the Staff Nurses who are working in the unit.

You will partake in general ward management duties, such as off duty, staff training, competency assessment and staff appraisals.

To apply you will need to be a registered nurse with current NMC registration, have experience of working within gynaecology and an understanding of early pregnancy. A gynaecology course would be an advantage to the role. To manage a caseload of women requiring support during early pregnancy and after early pregnancy loss.

To manage a caseload of women requiring support for any gynaecological condition attending the gynaecology assessment unit.

To ensure that skilled care is given to patients and all drugs and treatments are administered as prescribed.

To ensure when patients concerns are identified they are addressed where possible, and informal complaints dealt with appropriately.

To assess, investigate and interpret results and to implement a management plan and evaluate care of women with medical staff.

To impart news of loss of pregnancy, early fetal demise or ectopic pregnancy sensitively. This is a routine part of consultation and occurs in at least 50 per cent of cases seen per shift.

To provide follow-up care as appropriate and ensure all relevant information is available to enable informed choice about treatment to be made.

To liaise with the ward staff to ensure appropriate and timely discharge and follow-up arrangements are in place for women.

To ensure all women are fully informed of the risks and benefits of proposed procedures or treatments, contributing to the process of securing informed consent.

To produce and provide all women with relevant and accessible information regarding their treatment in accordance with Trust policies and procedures

To partake and support colleagues with the termination service in the unit if required and understand the complexities of this and the impact this may have on women.
