Job summary

We are seeking a motivated, innovative and influential person to lead our Emergency Department on a daily basis here at the West Suffolk Hospital. Our main goal at the WSH Emergency Department is to provide quality patient centred care, whilst striving as a team and as a Trust, to achieve the national ED targets. In this post you will be our floor lead in achieving this set goal.

We have recently undertaken a major expansion project and we now have our own Majors Assessment Area. This together with a Rapid Assessment Area means we can ensure we meet all our patients needs and ensure optimised service delivery. It doesnt stop here! We have a dedicated and enthusiastic ED work force that includes Acute Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) and Emergency Nurse Practitioners (ENPs) who can see, treat and discharge their own patients, assisting the medical ED team in delivering excellent care.

Following a CQC inspection in 2019, our Emergency Department received an overall rating of Good. We are passionate supporters of our nursing team at every grade, but recognise the unique skills and experience that our Band 6 staff bring to the team. As our ideal candidate you must have a strong desire to deliver high quality ED nursing care as part of a motivated team.

Promote effective communication and interpersonal skills to act as link person between the departmental staff and Unit Manager, other Specialist medical staff with in the Trust, and relevant external bodies (Out of Hours GPs, St Johns Ambulance, Ambulance staff as well as the Divisional and Trust Management Teams

Use effective and efficient interpersonal skills, supporting junior staff and the wider ED team, liaising with senior staff as appropriate

Create and maintain a safe and welcoming environment for patients, visitors and staff

Network both internally and externally to promote the Emergency Department

Facilitate the necessary process issues and to include close liaison with flow management team and to support timely placing of patients in the appropriate specialist bed

Contact with: Patients, relatives, carers, Medical staff, Nursing staff, reception staff, hospital coordinators, ambulance liaison officer, security, chaplains, police, external agencies, managers and directors on call.

Planning and Organisational

Manage the overarching co-ordination of the day to day operational activity across all areas of the department, and to ensure safe and timely progression of patients through ED

Facilitate the necessary process issue to include close liaison with the Hospital Co-ordination team to support timely placing of patients in the appropriate specialist bed

Primary source of emergency department escalation in accordance with the agreed process

support staff to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the delivery of individualised patient care, using research based practice where appropriate

To act as a staffing bleep holder for Unit Manager/Matron as required

Responsibility for Policy/Service Development

Act as an efficient and effective change agent

Have the ability to be visionary in their approach to service development and modernization

Support Unit Manager and Matron by ensuring the development and implementation of clinical governance within the Division by utilisation of:
