Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow (ST3+ Level) in General Medicine. Each post holder will rotate within general medicine to gain experience in 2 sub-specialties from those listed.

This is a fixed term post (December 2023 - September 2024).

West Suffolk Hospital is a busy and popular hospital, serving a population of 280,000 and is run by a forward-thinking Foundation Trust. The General Medicine Department has a supportive structure in place to ensure development within the department and will work with the successful candidates to gain experience and core competancies within both the NHS framework and Intermal Medical Training curriculum. We have an excellent track record of successful appointment to training programmes by our Clinical Fellows following a period of employment with us.

Main duties of the job

  • General ward work and on-going care of in-patients.
  • Support and supervise foundation year trainees
  • Maintenance of ward
  • Handover of patients to on call and hospital at night
  • Consultant ward
  • Attendance at MDTs and board
  • Attend outpatients
  • On call as per rota including night shifts.
  • Participate in ward and medical directorate clinical governance
  • Issue death certificate and provide statement for coroner's referral or evidence

The department of Medicine is run on an integrated acute medicine and care of the elderly ward based system, with most wards having at least three consultants, two Specialty Registrars, three Specialty Registrars/F2 trainees and three F1 trainees. F1 trainees are regularly rostered to clerking shifts on AAU under the supervision of the physician of the day. In the evenings and at weekends medical wards are covered by two F1 trainees, with support from the rest of the on call team. At night the hospital is covered by a hospital at night team run by the specialist registrar and including F2 trainees and enhanced trained nurses. F1 trainees no longer work at night within the hospital. Formal handover to the hospital at night time is an important component of the post for the on call F1 trainees.Each ward has their own ward based team of juniors including combinations of FY1, FY2, ST1 and ST2 trainees.

Each ward also has ward based StR(s) and a combination of medical and COE consultants. The division runs a physician of the day system, to cover the acute on call and provide a daily post take ward round of those admissions not retained in AAU or the short stay facilities.

  • Evidence that present achievement and performance is commensurate with totality of period of training
  • At least 24 months' experience in medicine or an ACCS programme or equivalent (not including Foundation modules) by the time of commencement of ST3 training

  • Hold full registration and licence to practise with the GMC
