Job summary

Applications are invited to apply for Consultant in Emergency Medicine at the James Paget University Hospital. This modern District General Hospital has approx. 500 beds and is situated in a coastal holiday area of East Anglia. It serves a population of 250,000 that increases considerably in the summer months.

Main duties of the job

Provision within the organisation of the department of a comprehensive Emergency Medicine service to the Trust, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness and the proper functioning of the department.

Liaison with colleagues in other specialties and with management to achieve such a service

Administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the running of the Emergency Medicine service.

The provision of advice, via professional and management structures at Divisional and Trust level, on the short- and long-term planning of comprehensive health provision for the local population.

Participation, as required, in the instruction of all professional groups, including the department's own postgraduate programme.

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • FCEM or equivalent
  • Hold a certificate or being within 6 months of completion of training or being on or eligible for the UK Specialist Register at the date of interview
  • ALS
  • ATLS
  • APLS

Desirable

  • Instructor status in life support courses

Experience & Knowledge

Essential

  • Wide experience in Emergency Medicine
  • Knowledge of using evidence based medicine to support decision making
  • Experience or specific training in leadership

Desirable

  • Interest and/or training in a sub-specialty complimentary to other consultants
  • Able to plan and develop innovation in the service delivered
  • Experience in Ultrasound

Training, audit, and research

Essential

  • Ability to use research outcomes in clinical practice
  • Commitment to teaching and training of undergraduates and resident doctors
  • Experience in conducting clinical audit
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development

Desirable

  • Courses relevant to medical education or training
