BAND 5 OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST - PAEDIATRICS Full Time | Fixed Term Contract
We are pleased to offer an opportunity to join our Paediatric Occupational Therapy Team at the James Paget University Hospital, on a fixed term basis until 31st March 2027.
This is an exciting time to join the team as we work on developing the service to meet the needs of the children and young people across Great Yarmouth and Waveney.
As a Paediatric occupational therapist, you will work with children and young people from birth to 19 years old to deliver a wide variety of occupational therapy assessment and intervention. This may include working with children both in clinic, hospital and community settings who have a range of complex needs, e.g.:
- Neuro disability
- Developmental coordination disorder
- Learning difficulties
- Palliative/end-of-life conditions
- Impaired perception and communication skills, e.g. cerebral palsy, learning disability
Main duties of the job
You will be responsible for your own caseload, supporting children and young people to reach their full potential. The role is based at our Newberry Child Development Centre but will also involve working in homes, schools and other community settings. You will need good organisational and time management skills to prioritise and manage your caseload efficiently and effectively.
You will be responsible for ensuring the use of effective assessment skills to identify, formulate, implement and evaluate individualised treatment plans
You will need to have effective communication skills to ensure a successful multidisciplinary approach to patient care. You will also need to be able to demonstrate management of barriers to communication and be able to motivate patients to maximise their potential.
You will also have non-clinical duties such as attending and being an active member of team meetings and peer support groups, partake in service development ideas, training and supervision of students and therapy assistant practitioners.

The post-holder is supervised on a regular basis by senior members of the Childrens Occupational Therapy Team. The supervision takes the form of monitoring practice through direct observation and one-to-one meetings (at least weekly initially but often daily), readily available advice and support, reviewing ability to manage workload and of coping ability, case note review, working alongside in a training/coaching role
To assist seniors with contributing to education, training and service development projects within the field of work
To assist evaluation of the occupational therapy service provided within the specialism

Education and Qualifications
Essential
- Achieved or working towards a Degree/MSc in Occupational Therapy
- Current Health Care Professions Council registration/or soon to be applied for post-graduating
Knowledge and Experience
Essential
- Previous Band 5 experience/student placements or working areas relevant to post
- Enthusiasm for Band 5 post working within community and hospital settings
- Awareness of clinical governance and evidence-based practice and its implications for occupational therapy
Skills, Abilities and Competencies
Essential
- Good communication skills, able to build rapport and empathy
- Demonstration of ability to act independently/on own initiative and have the ability to know when to ask for help. Acute hospitals are high pressure environments and the ability to cope in this environment is essential
- Problem solving/analytical skills
- Team working skills (evidence of multidisciplinary team working)
- Proactive and self-directed in learning
- Role requires the ability to travel within the Great Yarmouth and Waveney area. Must hold a full current driving licence or be able to make own travelling arrangements to fulfil the duties of the post, including visits to patients' homes with and without patients, delivery of equipment etc.
- Physically fit and able to comply with Trust Manual Handling Guidelines
