Job summary

Newborn Hearing Screening (NHSP) is one of the NHS National Screening Programmes. Babies have their hearing screened within the first 4 weeks after they are born. Identifying hearing loss early, gives babies a better chance of developing language, speech and communication skills.

An exciting opportunity for a part-time Newborn Hearing Screener has arisen to join our hospital based NHSP Team. The successful applicant will be screening very young babies hearing at the bedside on the Maternity Unit, on the Neo-natal Unit or in an outpatient clinic.

The successful applicant will be dynamic and dependable with excellent communication skills, good IT skills and knowledge of basic IT systems. They will be at ease with working with babies and their mothers to provide professional yet family-friendly experience. We are passionate about the service we provide and expect you to be too.

Previous experience is not essential as full training will be given. Successful applicants are expected to undertake a national training programme and pass an external practical examination following the training. Successful applicants must also be able to accurately record and use data relevant to the screening programme on the national and local databases.

This post involves shift working including weekends, bank holidays and evenings, therefore flexibility, reliability and excellent interpersonal working are essential to enable the screening programme to run smoothly and effectively.

Main duties of the job

Summary of Post

To work as a member of a team performing hearing screening of newborn babies within the maternity unit, outpatient clinic and community environment under the supervision of the Newborn Hearing Screening (NHSP) Manager.

To gather and accurately record, clinical and test data relevant to the hearing screening programme.

To inform parents / carers, and other healthcare professionals of the hearing screening outcome.

To ensure National Key Performance Indicators for the Newborn Hearing Screening Programme are at or better than the achievable level.

To undertake administration as required for smooth running of Newborn Hearing Screening and Paediatric Audiology.
