Job summary
To be a member of the Portering and Security team providing a customer focused service to patients, staff and visitors to the James Paget University Hospital. Experience of similar roles is desirable but not essential. Those who are willing to go above and beyond in contributing towards a safe and secure environment and assisting in the treatment of patients should feel at home in this role.
Main duties of the job
An opportunity to join the Portering and Security Department as a Portering and Security Officer has arisen.
As a Portering and Security Officer at the James Paget University Hospital, amongst other duties, you will work as part of a team charged with maintaining effective patient flow, and ensuring patient and staff safety across the site.
Armed with the capacity to defuse potentially violent situations, the ability to communicate effectively, and a passion for playing your part in the provision of the very best patient care, you will play a key role in the operational effort of the hospital.
This is a bank position and shift times will include nights and weekend working. The department is looking for reliable, regularly available and keen individuals to boost and support our hard working team.

Job responsibilities
- To assist in the provision of an efficient and effective Portering and Security Service to all Wards and Departments in accordance with established procedures.
- To be responsible for the transportation of blood collections and specimens.
- To assist with all bed movements around the site, dealing with stressed and anxious patients and relatives in a courteous and sympathetic manner.
- As required, under the supervision of the nursing staff, assist with the movement of patients in accordance with the policies for patient movement.
- To employ appropriate skills to diffuse and de-escalate aggressive behaviour and physically assist in restraining violent and confused patients.
- Operating the CCTV System as and when required.
- To carry out security patrols of the hospital and its surrounding site, ensuring that a high profile is maintained.
- To have a sound knowledge of the layout of the hospital and the location of departments (including plant rooms) and to be clear about fire, fumes and chemical alerts and MAJINC procedures.
- To be responsible for the changing of all medical gases on the Wards and Departments.
- To carry out procedures in the event of a major fire alert, the safe and efficient evacuation of staff and patients.
- To act with respect and dignity in removing bodies of patients who have died within the hospital to the mortuary.
- There may be a requirement to drive hospital vehicles as and when required.
- To actively participate in the training initiatives as and when required.
- Any other duties which may be requested by the Facilities Manager or the Supervisors.
