Infant Feeding Peer Support Coordinator

Job summary

The post holder will support the implementation of the trust infant feeding peer support strategy with the specific responsibility for the development and coordination of volunteer infant feeding supporters within a hospital and community setting.

The post holder will develop a welcoming volunteer peer support programme with appropriate training and supervision.

The post holder will work closely as part of the infant feeding team helping to recruit and train volunteers to help support women who wish to breastfeed.

Main duties of the job

Organise and oversee the recruitment process for potential breastfeeding volunteers.

Ensure all training and induction is fulfilled.

Provide a warm and informed presence for volunteers.

Understand and respect the need for confidentiality amongst staff, volunteers and patients.

Act as a link person between the peer support and the Infant feeding team.

To support and facilitate regular supervision and training updates in line with the UNICEF baby friendly standards.

Deal with any conflict, complaints as appropriate and refer to line management for support.

Support with workshops to raise awareness for local parents about the importance of breastfeeding and the support needed to breastfeed successfully.

  • Peer Support Qualification or equivalent experience
  • UNICEF breastfeeding management course. Clinical experience of supporting Parents with breastfeeding and the UNICEF BFI Standards

Knowledge & Experience

Desirable

  • Experience & knowledge of working in, or alongside the NHS, local authority or other statutory provider
  • Recent experience of working with families or in a health promotional setting
  • Experience of coordinating and supervising other staff
  • Experience of delivering training
  • Experience of collecting, analysing and reporting of key data and information

Skills & Knowledge

  • Proficient IT skills including Microsoft Office
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills with ability to prioritise own and other's workloads
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Able to work within policies and procedures/ guidelines and explain these to others

  • Excellent communication/ negotiation skills
