Job summary

To be a member of the Portering team providing a customer focused service to patients, staff and visitors to the James Paget University Hospital.

Main duties of the job

If the answer to these questions is yes, there is an opportunity for you to join the Portering and Security team as a Radiology Portering Officer.

The successful candidate will work in support of all Imaging Modalities and CTS transferring patients from their wards to the departments thus playing an integral role in the patients care pathway.

The Trust hasc500 inpatient beds located on the James Paget University Hospital. Main duties and Responsibilities

  1. To assist in the provision of an efficient and effective Portering Service to all Wards and Departments in accordance with established procedures.

  1. To be responsible for the transportation of blood collections and specimens.

  1. To assist with all bed movements around the site, dealing with stressed and anxious patients and relatives in a courteous and sympathetic manner.

  1. As required, under the supervision of the nursing staff, assist with the movement of patients in accordance with the policies for patient movement.

  1. To have a sound knowledge of the layout of the hospital and the location of departments (including plant rooms) and to be clear about fire, fumes and chemical alerts and MAJAX procedures.

  1. To be responsible for the changing of all medical gases on the Wards and Departments.

  1. To carry out procedures in the event of a major fire alert, the safe and efficient evacuation of staff and patients.

  1. To act with respect and dignity in removing bodies of patients who have died within the hospital to the mortuary.

  1. There may be a requirement to drive hospital vehicles, as and when required.

  1. To actively participate in the training initiatives, which may be necessary from time to time.

  1. Any other duties which may be requested by the Facilities Manager or the Supervisors.

Infection Control

Staff working in a clinical environment must ensure that they understand and follow the infection control policies, procedures and best practice applicable within the Trust.

In order to do so they must:

  • Observe all infection control policies and practices relevant to the post.
  • Act as a role model to others regarding infection control best practice
  • Ensure that they keep up to date and attend all relevant training relating to infection control issues applicable to their post.
  • Ensure that patients, visitors and contractors are aware of and follow infection control best practice (where applicable).
  • Report non-compliance or concerns regarding infection control issues / best practice to their line manager.

Health and Safety Responsibilities

To ensure that the Trusts Health and Safety Policies are understood and observed and that procedures are followed.

The post holder must co-operate with Management in discharging its responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

Assist the Logistics Supervisor and the Environmental & Logistics Manager in the implementation of HTM 07-01, The Safe Management of Healthcare Waste and all other legislation in regard to waste, environmental and energy management.

To ensure reasonable health and safety of themselves and others and to ensure the agreed safety procedures are carried out to maintain a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.

To ensure that all incidents occurring within the department are reported in accordance with Trust procedures, investigated and corrective action taken as necessary and/or reported to senior management and specialist advisers.

Other Information

All Portering personnel are required to wear a uniform, safety shoes, and radio ear pieces as provided by the hospital.

Portering personnel will also be required to take part in any other security training as the Trust requires.

Moving and Handling Responsibilities

To ensure that all moving and handling tasks within their area of responsibility are assessed, that there is a manual handling plan indicating safe systems of work, and that documentation is regularly maintained and updated.

To observe and monitor the application of M&H skills, ensuring safe practice.

To attend appropriate training in accordance with the M&H assessed risks within the work area.
