Senior Respiratory Physiologist - Peterborough

Job summary

This exciting opportunity to join our Respiratory Investigations team comes as part of the recruitment drive in readiness for the opening of the Peterborough Community Diagnostic Centre in October 2026. Once open, the role will largely be based from the CDC however will involve some rotation through both Peterborough City Hospital and Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Huntingdon.

Reporting to our team of Chief Respiratory Physiologists, you will be responsible for performing and reporting a wide range of respiratory investigations with support from senior staff and in conjunction with the medical team where necessary.

In 2024 the Respiratory Investigations team performed over 14,000 diagnostics across the NWAFT footprint: Peterborough City Hospital, Hinchingbrooke Hospital, and Doddington Community Hospital. The planned expansion to the purpose-built Peterborough Community Diagnostic Centre in October of 2026 will significantly increase throughput and improve patient experience and wait times.

Our team comprises of ARTP & AHCS accredited clinical staff, you would be working with them to provide testing and reporting services, and offer guidance and advice for clinicians and patients. As part of your role you would be supporting the Chief Respiratory Physiologist and deputise for them on occasion.

Main duties of the job

  • Maintain current AHCS/HCPC registration as a senior respiratory physiologist.

  • Using in-depth, detailed analysis and interpretation of a range of clinical and technical data, the post holder will independently provide a factual report for diagnostics performed personally and where necessary by others within the Trust and in the primary care setting.

  • Responsible for appropriate assessment of patients during testing, making decisions on the administration of medications and making judgements around high risk clinical investigations on patients with significant or life threatening medical conditions.

  • Be responsible for interpreting medical conditions and recommend a course of action in conjunction with the patient and other health professionals.

  • Report any potential risks, initiating appropriate action/investigation through the risk management system. Inform a Chief Respiratory Physiologist when appropriate.

  • Act as a positive change agent, identifying and initiating changes as required enhancing service provision.
