Job description

Job responsibilities

The Senior Project Manager will lead the planning, management and delivery of a complex portfolio of capital projects across the Trusts estate, with a particular focus on RAAC mitigation, statutory compliance, backlog maintenance and infrastructure resilience at Hinchingbrooke Hospital. This is a senior role within the Capital Projects team and is critical to ensuring the Trust maintains safe, compliant and operational healthcare facilities in a live clinical environment.

The post holder will be responsible for managing projects across the full lifecycle, from early feasibility and option appraisal through business case development, procurement, construction, commissioning and final handover. They will ensure projects are delivered safely, on time and within approved budgets, in line with NHS standards, statutory regulations and the Trusts governance framework.

Working closely with clinical, operational and estates colleagues, the Senior Project Manager will translate strategic objectives into practical, deliverable project plans that minimise disruption to patient care. The role requires strong judgement and decision making, balancing technical, financial and operational risks while ensuring patient safety and service continuity remain paramount.

The post holder will lead multidisciplinary teams comprising internal staff, consultants and contractors, providing clear direction, assurance and performance management. They will oversee contractor and consultant performance, manage procurement processes, administer contracts, and ensure value for money is achieved without compromising safety or quality.

A key part of the role is maintaining robust governance and assurance. This includes preparing and presenting high quality reports, risk registers, programmes and financial updates to Programme Boards, senior leadership and external stakeholders, including NHS England and regulators. The Senior Project Manager will actively manage risks and issues, escalating where required and ensuring mitigations are implemented effectively.

The role also includes responsibility for managing project budgets and forecasts, overseeing change control, and ensuring compliance with Standing Financial Instructions, CDM Regulations, Building Regulations and relevant HTMs and HBNs. Post-project reviews will be undertaken to ensure lessons learned are captured and embedded into future schemes.

In addition, the Senior Project Manager will support the development of the Trusts longer-term estates and capital strategy, contribute to business case development for major investments, and represent the Trust at internal and external meetings as required. They may also line manage and mentor junior staff, supporting capability building within the Capital Projects team.

This role would suit an experienced capital project professional who is motivated by delivering complex projects in a high-risk, high-impact healthcare environment, and who is committed to improving patient safety, service resilience and the quality of NHS estates.
