Trust Speciality Registrar ST3+ in Stroke

Job summary

This is a post in the Medicine Clinical Directorate for the appointment of a Speciality Registrar in Medicine Stroke Services for Northwest Anglia NHS Foundation Trust to join the existing base of our consultants.

This post will be based at Peterborough City Hospital (PCH) or Hinchingbrooke.

The post holder will work standard 40 hours a week but applications welcome for those wishing to do less than whole time.

The post holder is managerially responsible to the lead clinician in Medicine for older people and accountable to the Divisional Director and Divisional Operations Director within the Division of Medicine in addition to being clinically accountable to the Chief Medical Officer & Responsible Officer.

Applicants must be fully registered with the General Medical Council.

Main duties of the job

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The principal elements of the post will be:

o To facilitate provision of services in our Acute Stroke Centre to the population of Greater Peterborough & Southwest Lincolnshire in conjunction with the existing Consultants and doctors.

o To participate actively in trust clinical governance and audit.

o Undertake continuing medical education.

o Supervise and train junior medical staff as appropriate.

o Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as appropriate.

On call duties

There are currently no on call duties attached to this post, but candidates may wish to participate in the Registrar GIM rota on discussion with the Clinical lead & lead Physician at PCH. This will be factored into job plans if the successful candidate chooses to undertake this additional work.

Teaching and Audit

The department has a long-standing commitment to undergraduate medical education, taking students regularly from Leicester University and sometimes from other areas. The post holder will be expected to take part in this teaching. The postholder is expected to take part in teaching FYs and Trust doctors.

Continuing medical education and professional development is expected and encouraged by provision of appropriate facilities and study leave.

Peterborough & Hinchingbrooke Hospitals are one of eight hospitals within the Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire Health Authority designated as a Postgraduate Medical Education Centre. An active programme of postgraduate education is provided on site. The department of medicine for older people meets on Wednesday lunchtime for teaching and audit presentations. We have comprehensive teaching programme for doctors and other health care professionals on Tuesday afternoon. A rolling half day programme of audit and education takes place once a month in which routine clinical commitments are cancelled. A well-established clinical audit department provides assistance for these sessions.

The Stroke team also hold a Mortality and Morbidity Meeting and Thrombolysis and thrombectomy meeting once a month. There is also a weekly stroke radiology meeting and a collaborative heart and brain MDT with cardiology.

Research

There is local research and ethics committee and research at Peterborough will be strongly encouraged. The Medicine for Older People Department is actively involved in various multicentre studies.

  • A minimum of 3 months experience at SpR level in Medicine for older people
  • Understanding of NHS structure
  • Completion of foundation years 1 & 2 and at least 3 years medical experience post foundation training. At least one year of this should be in Medicine for older people.
  • Evidence of completion of audit and QIP projects
  • Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets
