Our Urgent Care department located at Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Huntingdon is a busy environment with friendly and supportive teams of doctors, nurses, and the wider multidisciplinary team. The department comprises an emergency room, an ambulatory care unit (ACU) providing patient day care and investigations, and a medical short-stay unit (MSSU).

As a Healthcare Assistant in Urgent Care, you will be required to attend all areas of the department. You will be caring for patients when they are most vulnerable and together with your team, you will do your utmost for your patients and be their advocate when needed.

You will be passionate about patient care, and able to think on your feet while demonstrating a flexible approach to teamwork and excellent communication skills.

Typical shift patterns are as follows:

Long Day - 07.00 - 19.30 with 30-minute breaks

Night - 19.00 - 07.30 with 1-hour break OR 2 breaks of 30 minutes each

As a healthcare assistant in the fast-paced Urgent Care department, your daily duties will vary and change frequently due to the unpredictability of the events.

You will be supervised by the senior staff, however, you will enjoy a certain level of autonomy and decision-making in managing and prioritising the tasks in critical situations.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The duties will also vary depending on the day/night shift. The main duties will include:

Respond to call bells throughout.

Ensure patients are checked hourly and the ED Safety checklist is updated.

Personal care, food, personal hygiene and overall reassurance, comfort, and safety.

Venepuncture and cannulation.

Wound care (including closing, cleaning, and dressing wounds as well as burns care).

Application of plaster casts and immobilisation devices.

Undertake vital observations.

ECGs.

Bladder scans.

Transfer patients to Diagnostic imaging/inpatient wards/other departments, as necessary, in a safe and timely manner.

Completing any bloods/investigations/treatments as ordered.

Environmental cleaning of the department and equipment.

Assisting as necessary with the care of patients in the Resuscitation area.

Administrative duties (filling in and filing paperwork).

When your tasks prove to be challenging, our Wellbeing team will be there to support you as well as our in-house physiotherapy services.
