Job summary

Our Pharmacy Services is offering an excellent opportunity to an ambitious and self-motivated Pharmacy Technician with good communication and interpersonal skills to become an integral part of the medicines management pharmacy team. You will be base at Peterborough City Hospital, however travel between North West Anglia NHS Trust hospital sites may be required. This is a part time role of 22.5 hours a week with these being flexible on arrangement

You will provide an efficient and high-quality medicines management service on a rotational basis across the wards. In conjunction with the clinical pharmacists, you will provide safe and effective care for our patients.

You will be wither qualified to Level 3 National Certificate in Pharmacy Services or equivalent. You should be able to work as an Accuracy Checking Technician (ACT) and willing to undertake Medicine Management Skills Module 1 & 2, or equivalent.

We will facilitate and support you with in-house training programmes as outlined by management and the education and training department.

You will be part of the weekend rota attending all the Trust hospital sites as required.

Main duties of the job

You will provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care and medicines management services to all areas of North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust and areas supplied under Service Level Agreements, ensuring compliance with current medicines legislation.

Your will participate medicines reconciliation, assessment of patient's own medications both on admission and on discharge, one stop dispensing, discharge transcribing, near patient dispensing and patient counselling.

You will support the core dispensary service via the accurate dispensing of prescriptions and utilising the Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician Course (ACPT).

You will have joint along with other pharmacy staff for the safety and security of pharmaceuticals, including controlled drugs.

  • Attend allocated wards each day and ensure Medicines reconciliations are completed within 24 hours of admittance in line with Trust policies and procedures.
  • Ensure patients own drugs are suitable for use in line with departmental and Trust policies and procedures.
  • To facilitate the supply of medicines where applicable.
  • Ensure appropriate availability of prescribed medicines in POD locker and in line with Trust One Stop Dispensing policy and discharge planning.
  • Liaise with dispensary and support services to ensure medications are promptly ordered and received.
  • Liaise with ward staff to ensure optimum patient care, discussing any supply problems and offering alternatives if appropriate.
  • To prioritise workflow and escalate pharmaceutical issues in a timely manner.
  • Ensure stock lists are regularly reviewed with ward staff and the specialist pharmacist.
  • Build on patient partnerships to ensure medicines are taken as prescribed and to counsel patients and carers on the safe and effective use of medicines.
  • Act as an accredited checking technician, including the final check of patients medication, in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the dispensing and supply of medicines, including cytotoxic drugs, to patients in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensure dispensing and prescribing is undertaken in line with the Trust formulary, challenging where appropriate, and ensuring adequate documentation is provided to Primary Care, if agreed to proceed with supply.
  • Be actively involved in the discharge process, including the transcription of discharge medications.

  • To participate in any relevant audit or survey being undertaken by the department.
