Job summary

Are you an ambitious Consultant Surgeon aiming to progress your career in a new environment?

Our General Surgery team at North West Anglia are delighted to offer a great opportunity to a specialist Upper GI Consultant Surgeon to join us on a substantive appointment.

You will enjoy working with an ambitious and innovative team of specialist Consultants, junior staff and a multi-disciplinary team in providing comprehensive General Surgical service covering all the main sub-specialities, including Laparoscopic Surgery.

At Hinchingbrooke Hospital, you will be part of a new generation of Consultants, providing innovative and enhanced services in a new, technologically improved Theatres block which is due to open in 2024. Currently, the hospital has a main Theatres block and a Treatment Centre.

We are committed to supporting your career in an environment where your skills and initiatives are valued. We welcome the development of special interests in particular, Pelvic Floor, Advanced Endoscopy (especially EMR skills) and Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery. A large modern state of the art Learning and Development Centre is at your disposal at both main hospital sites.

You must be on the General Medical Councils Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register (for Trainees if in a Training Programme within the UK).

We respect your wellbeing and we are open to flexibility in your working patterns.

Main duties of the job

The job plan has been created to include a 10 PA appointment with a 7.5 direct PA and 2.5 SPA split, including on-call. A formal job plan will be agreed between you and Divisional Operational Manager, three to six months after the commencement date.

You will participate in the General Surgery emergency cover on a 1 in 8 basis and assist colleagues reciprocally to cover absence. The on-call is based on the Consultant week.

You will be clinically responsible for a wide range of Upper GI and General Surgical patients. Working in collaboration with your team, you will develop and implement innovative working practices, and you will support the growing clinical contribution of non-medical staff.

You play an active role in the teaching, training and other educational activities within the unit, as well as supervising and managing junior medical staff.

Attending Clinical Audit is of paramount importance and the Trust would expect you to actively participate in this. You will be required to follow agreed protocols and observe the Trust's patient safety policies and principles, to enable the provision of high quality care including the prevention of healthcare acquired infection by rigorous and consistent compliance with Trust policies.

For an informal discussion regarding the role, and to arrange an informal visit, please contact Mr Adrian Harris, Upper GI Consultant, on adrianharris@nhs.net, or John Crelly, Divisional Operations Manager, on 07508 148441 or john.crelly@nhs.net.
