Specialised Invasive Cardiac Physiologist/Scientist

Job summary

The job has a long-term R&R agreement of 10% rising to 12.5% after 3 years.

This is a healthcare science role, within the Cardiac Physiology Team, and the post holder will be expected to have the skills, autonomy and experience equivalent to the Band 6 level. This includes the experience and knowledge to provide intermediate level technical scientific expertise for all areas of invasive cardiology and occasionally non-invasive work as well.

Areas of focus will include supporting the primary PCI service, including participating in the on-call rota.

Independent invasive technical expertise will be expected in the cardiac catheter laboratories for coronary intervention and basic pacing implants, as well as assisting with all other types of device implants and follow-up (including off-site).

Work will also include conducting and reporting on non-invasive diagnostic testing areas as required, including Holter analysis, physiology-led exercise tests, perfusion stress testing, remote monitoring of implantable loop recorders and tilt testing.

There is the possibility for the post holder to develop knowledge in structural work and cardiac device management and take up higher level qualifications and accreditation.

There will be some leadership responsibilities within the role such as helping with education and training, line management and service delivery.

There will be an expectation for patient centred care in line with Trust values of compassion, collaboration, and excellence.

Main duties of the job

Scientific and Clinical Practice:

Clinical proficiency for a range of basic and intermediate clinical and scientific investigations and treatments, for a range of pathologies, carried out under the band 6 remit. This includes haemodynamic assessments and direct clinical measurements in catheterisation procedures, traces and recordings from devices, monitors, and diagnostic testing machines, prescription of basic cardiac device therapies, and the interpretation, reporting, documentation and escalation of those procedures. More complex work and clinics would be undertaken with supervision.

Communication and Team Working:

The role requires excellent communication skills and an ability to work with a wide range of people including clinicians, managers, MDT groups, patients and the public. Participation in the on-call rota is expected and a flexible collaborative approach would be helpful. There is opportunity to gain experience in audit and research work.

Managing people and resources:

There will be some leadership responsibilities within the role such as helping with education and training, line management and service delivery.

Self-Management:

There is the possibility for the post holder to develop knowledge in structural work and cardiac device management and take up higher level qualifications and accreditation.

  • BSc Clinical Cardiac Science or equivalent

Desirable

  • MSc Cardiac Science
  • Full (exam and logbook) or partial (exam) accreditation with BHRS, IBHRE, EHRA or other equivalent in the clinical management of cardiac devices
  • Registered with RCCP or registration with the AHCS as a Cardiac Science Practitioner or PTP equivalent

Experience

Essential

  • Diagnostic and interventional angiography, including on-call for the primary PCI service and adjunctive technologies such as IVUS,OCT and Pressure wire
  • Have a confident knowledge of the Anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of the heart
  • Extensive Cardiac Physiology experience post qualification at BSc or equivalent level

Desirable

  • Structural cardiology such as TAVI and ASD closures
  • Experience of using Impella or VADS
  • Experience of pacing and complex device (ICD, CRT-D) implants and/or follow-up
  • Advanced knowledge of pacing and ICD complications and ability to troubleshoot these issues.
  • Advanced Knowledge of all the major CRM companies CRM devices.
  • On call experience.
