Job summary
Royal Papworth Hospital is seeking a dynamic lead pharmacist to take charge of our pre-operative pharmacy services. This exciting new role offers the opportunity to develop and lead a key service, optimising patient care and ensuring the best possible outcomes for surgical patients. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the vision for pre-operative pharmacy services and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to enhance the quality of care provided.
This role offers the post holder a great deal of flexibility and we would encourage prospective candidates to get in touch to discuss the opportunities available. Royal Papworth pharmacy is a small, close team and this role will work in collaboration with lead surgical and critical care pharmacists. As a department we are committed to supporting flexible working and continuous education. If you are not already an independent prescriber, we would be happy to support you to gain the qualification. Our staff are encouraged to attend conferences and networking events, participate in research and enrol on leadership courses.
We are also anticipating the opening of the new Cambridge South train station in early 2026, with excellent railway connections to the East of England and London, providing quick and convenient commuting access to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
Main duties of the job
Royal Papworth is renowned across the country and the world for the specialist cardiothoracic interventions that are carried out on a daily basis. Examples include pulmonary thromboendardectomy, MAZE procedure, left atrial appendage occlusion, robot thoracic surgery and transplantation. We will provide training on these procedures and the associated prescribing of medications to give you the confidence and competence to effectively carry out your role.
The post holder will take the lead on ensuring that thorough, accurate records are made of the medication patients are taking prior to admission. They will provide advice to patients and healthcare staff on the safe use of medicines in the pre and peri operative period. As an independent prescriber they will prescribe bridging therapy where necessary and ensure that there is a plan for the management of patients' usual medicines, including during nil by mouth and perioperative periods.
This post will involve working closely with the wider multidisciplinary team, participating in MDT meetings, providing expert pharmaceutical advice on complex cases and contributing to the development of pre-operative services.
