Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust

Emergency Operations Centre Lead Doctor

Information:

This job is now closed

Job summary

Yorkshire Ambulance Service is seeking to recruit a General Practitioner to support our emergency operations, initially over the winter period. This is an exciting opportunity to experience working within the emergency operations centre (bases in Wakefield or York), experience patient flow through the emergency response process, and be involved in the efficient and compassionate management of those who require a less urgent response.

The post holder will be an established GP with experience of remote clinical management (by telephone/video) and an enthusiasm to support a multi-professional team clinical development. The post holder may perform direct clinical duties, and system training will be provided to facilitate this, but their primary role will be supporting other clinicians in developing their clinical skills and managing uncertainty.

The aim of the Emergency Operations Centre Lead Doctor is to reduce inappropriate ambulance deployments, reduce inappropriate conveyance and reduce Emergency Department admissions, by using their expert medical knowledge and experience.

Main duties of the job

The doctor should be able to monitor emergency calls received by the Ambulance Service and work with clinicians and dispatch supervisors to identify calls in which a remote assessment may be beneficial to the patient in providing care closer to home. The doctor will also be expected, when appropriate, to speak to crews directly, either when they call in for advice from the scene, and it is identified that medical input will be helpful, or by proactive contact with crews at the scene to assist in decision making, for cases identified by clinical advisors. The EOC doctor may directly contact the patient to provide a clinical assessment and arrange ongoing care. The doctor should assist dispatch colleagues in prioritisation of interfacility transfers and GP calls - including liaising with colleagues in the hospital and GPs on the scene with patients.

All decisions taken will be recorded by the doctor in the relevant Trust IT system for which full training will be given. Clinical discussions made directly with patients or indirectly via another clinician should also be recorded on the appropriate clinical record system.

The doctor should ideally have an interest in Medical Education/Leadership and will proactively facilitate the professional development of clinicians in the EOC.

Indemnity will be provided by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, but the clinician MUST have personal medical protection insurance.
