Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an innovative and enthusiastic Occupational Therapy Assistant to join our dynamic, well-established service, within the fascinating and challenging field of forensic mental health. The post will be based on Westerdale ward at Clifton House which is a Male Forensic Psychiatric Ward. The post is advertised for 37.5 hours a week. The role of the Occupational Therapy Assistant is to help to compliment the multi-disciplinary team by ensuring continuity of activities and interventions supported by a qualified Occupational Therapist. Successful candidates will be offered structured supervision, appraisal and opportunities for professional development within the workplace.

Main duties of the job

The Occupational Therapy Assistant will become a member of the multidisciplinary team and will provide flexible and constructive programmes of activity under the direction and supervision of the qualified Occupational Therapist. The individual will have specific responsibilities both clinically and administratively, where they are expected to work with minimal supervision. They will contribute to the provision of a high quality care and risk assessment for service users.

Ideally you will have experience in mental health and have excellent communication and organisational skills. Knowledge of mental health would help and an interest in occupation and it's benefits to an individual's overall health and wellbeing would be of benefit. You will form an integral member of a dynamic team currently developing intervention pathways and expanding our interventions for people with a range of mental health conditions.

Job responsibilities

  • To support an Occupational Therapy treatment programme for service users, under the supervision of an OT, and assist the OT/s and MDT in the implementation of comprehensive Occupational Therapy based/MDT care plans for service users.
  • In liaison with the OT/s, to select activities appropriate to service user needs and carry these out or incorporate these into the weekly programme in collaboration with the service user and the MDT.
  • To develop and coordinate a weekly program of therapeutic activities under the supervision and guidance of an OT.
  • To support and facilitate therapeutic activities on an individual, group and community basis.
  • To act as a co-facilitator of therapeutic group or 1:1 activities, on ward and across the service.
  • To engage with service users to develop or maintain skills in self-care, work/productivity and leisure.
  • To support the facilitation of the weekly therapeutic programme undertaken by others in the provision of resources.
  • To observe and record all interactions with service users; skills/behaviour/engagement in addition to their mental health needs and feedback relevant information to the MDT.
  • To complete Occupational Therapy checklists following appropriate training.
  • To participate in the multi-disciplinary approach to service user care.
  • To maintain Occupational Therapy based standards of practice, particularly in respect of the codes of ethics and professional practice.
  • To contribute to the education and training of staff within the service and unit where appropriate.

  • To demonstrate a commitment to involving service users and carers in seeking their views and comments about their care and treatment.
