Business Manager - NHS Workforce Alliance

The NHS Workforce Alliance is a market-leading team of health workforce procurement experts, which delivers a full range of commercial services in the complex and high-value NHS workforce market. The Alliance is a partnership of five organisations, with the North of England Commercial Procurement Collaborative working with the three other NHS-owned procurement hubs (NHS London Procurement Partnership, NHS Commercial Services, and NHS East of England Collaborative Procurement Hub) and with the Crown Commercial Service, the UK Government's procurement arm for the public sector nationally. Our partnership combines unrivalled scale with deep local knowledge of NHS trusts across the country. We are part of the NHS and motivated by a genuine desire to support the NHS in delivering patient care.

Main duties of the job

An exciting and brand-new opportunity has arisen for a Business Manager to join the NHS Workforce Alliance. The role is hosted by the North of England Commercial Procurement Collaborative but is responsible to all five Alliance partners and will report on a day-to-day basis Operations Director of the Alliance. The role will involve a mix of office-based and home working, with occasional travel required for off-site meetings.

Job responsibilities

The key responsibilities of the role are:

  • Effective administration of financial planning and management (including budget management, internal transfer payments, monitoring business performance)
  • Secretariat and administrative support to the Executive and Operational Management Boards, and to the members of the Operational Management Board
  • Development and implementation of standard systems and processes, including a strategic risk register and issues log
  • Maintenance and management of internal document storage (e.g. on the shared portal)
  • Development and maintenance of an Operational Performance Dashboard tracking all Alliance KPIs in a single place.

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual driven by a desire to make a positive impact on the NHS. The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate strong personal skills, a sound understanding of business management, and relevant experience in either a business or project management role. You will also be an excellent communicator, have a strong customer focused ethos, and

flexibility and initiative in working in a complex and fast-moving environment. Specific experience in the NHS or in a commercial function is advantageous but not required if other relevant experience can be demonstrated.

As a member of the central management function of the NHS Workforce Alliance you will be able to:

  • Work effectively across functional groups, including procurement, category management, communications, customer engagement, supplier management and data analytics / business intelligence.
  • Master a complex information set to deliver concise reports to the Executive and Management Boards
  • Build effective working relationships with colleagues working across the country, and keep a steady focus on results-based outputs
  • Show initiative and resilience in problem-solving
  • Be financially literate and experienced in budget-management
  • Effectively influence colleagues without having direct line-management responsibility
  • From a productive professional relationship with the Operations Director, offering advice and taking direction as appropriate.
