Job description

Job responsibilities

The service opened in January 2022 and offers a welcoming, therapeutic environment to support young people aged from 13 up to 18 years of age who need the support of an inpatient service in their journey to recovery.

Red Kite View supports young people experiencing significant psychiatric, psychological or emotional problems that are causing them interpersonal, educational and social functioning problems. The team works with a huge range of other services across West Yorkshire supporting young peoples mental health including the NHS, local authorities and third sector providers.

It has 22 beds, across two wards and is staffed by a dedicated multi-disciplinary team including nurses, psychiatrists, teachers, clinical psychologists, and a wide range of allied health professionals and non-clinical support staff. The service team works closely with the young persons CYPMHS Community team during their stay at Red Kite View.

Most young people will come to Red Kite View as informal patients. Some young people may need to be admitted under the Mental Health Act (1983) or subject to other court orders. Whatever the situation of the young person they will be offered assessment, treatment and support in one of our two wards. Both wards offer light, modern facilities including spacious, comfortable and private en-suite bedrooms.

You will have great interpersonal skills and be able to establish a professional working relationship with young people and families. You will be cool in a crisis, it's a busy clinical area and we manage lots of risk-taking behaviour and deliberate self-harm. It is a demanding, yet rewarding role.

Ideally, you will have experience of working in mental health services or working with young people in an inpatient setting, although thats not essential. Your values are more important to us and you will receive full training and induction in this role.

We are looking for someone who genuinely wants to make a lasting impact on young people, who insists on doing things with care and diligence and is able to think on their feet.

The CYPMHS inpatient unit structure has been newly designed specifically to enable and encourage progression, your development is vital to the service, so you will be fully supported to continue to progress within your career.

Experience of working with a range of service users with complex mental health needs and/or a learning disability and/or autism is very beneficial, coupled with a minimum L2/L3 NVQ qualification in Health & Social Care (or commitment to achieve within 6 months of commencement), or demonstrable equivalent experience in the role of a health support worker and/or demonstrable lived experience.

Communication is key for this role, you will therefore have outstanding communication skills to enable you to work in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team, young people and their family and/or carers.

You will be able to manage your own time effectively, work well in groups or 1:1 with service users and colleagues, be proactive in getting on with your work, but also know when to ask for advice and support.

All applicants to this post will ideally hold a L2 or Level 3 Diploma / NVQ in healthcare, or possess skills, knowledge, and experience to an equivalent level. Where the applicant does not possess the actual qualification or demonstrable experience the Trust may require applicants to commit to beginning this (or a Level 3 qualification) within 6 months of commencing in post unless extenuating circumstances exist at the discretion of the Recruiting Manager.
