Join us at Clifton House low secure forensic hospital and EXPERIENCE MENTAL HEALTH NURSING WITHIN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM

Undertake your preceptorship in the fascinating arena of forensic mental health. Roles are available for newly qualified RMNs at Clifton House, York.

You could develop the skills and knowledge required to progress in this specialism by working on our male assessment and treatment ward or our female assessment, treatment and rehab ward.

At Clifton House we provide excellent care, treatment and support for adults with diagnosed severe and enduring mental illness who have been in contact with criminal justice services, or whose individual symptoms and experiences of mental illness would put them at a high risk of dangerous and criminal behaviour and the need for hospital treatment within conditions of low security.

We work within a trauma-informed model, with a non-judgemental and recovery-focussed ethos, to ensure the best treatment and outcomes for our patients.

Main duties of the job

We will support you to develop enhanced skills to allow you to work safely and effectively within adedicated and committed multi-disciplinary team.

Our comprehensive preceptorship package includes:

  • An introduction to the forensic elements of the Mental Health Act
  • An introduction to and further training in Trauma Informed Care, and its place in forensic treatment and rehabilitation
  • Training in specialist risk assessment and risk management
  • Opportunities to work alongside criminal justice agencies including prison services, police, probation
  • Access to an expert multi-disciplinary team of nurses, psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, OT

Beyond preceptorship, you will have the opportunity to train and specialise in specific areas of interest such as: Dual Diagnosis; Non-medical prescribing; Enhanced Risk Assessment and Management; Personality Disorders; Family Interventions;

Within Forensic Services there is ample scope for career development and progression.

Job responsibilities

As a preceptee nurse you would work as part of a ward-based multi-disciplinary team providing 24hr care, treatment and support alongside continuous risk assessment of a patient cohort of:

12 male patients (Westerdale Ward) or 10 female patients (Bluebell Ward) diagnosed with severe and enduring mental illnesses and associated risk behaviours which require that treatment for their illness is provided in a secure setting. Bluebell Ward also offers longer term rehabilitation provision.

Upon successful completion of your preceptorship your duties would include:

    • To undertake the role of primary nurse for a designated group of service users, be responsible for the assessment of care needs, and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for that group of service users.
    • To provide clinical leadership, supervising, supporting and appraising junior members of staff including healthcare support workers and students as required.
    • To undertake the role of shift co-ordinator or security nurse within the unit as required. Ensuring the implementation of agreed care plans, high quality nursing care and evidence based practice within the clinical service area.
    • To undertake the role of care co-ordinator to individual service user, providing, in conjunction with the MDT, specialist packages of care for service users with a history of offending behaviour linked to their mental disorder
    • To facilitate comprehensive risk assessment and management plans using the HCR-20 and develop treatment and recovery plans for service users within a secure environment
