Job summary

We are looking to appoint one assistant psychologist (fixed term 12 months, full time) to join the team on Ward 5, Newsam Centre. As an assistant psychologist with an interest in mental health illness and curiosity to understand the human minds in its various complexities, your role would be to work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team to assist in delivering psychologically-informed care to service users on the ward. A wish and an ability to make and maintain meaningful relationships with service users and staff is central in this role as well as an openness to integrate the psychological perspective with the perspectives of other professions, such as psychiatry, nursing, occupational therapy, psychology and drug and alcohol specialists.

Main duties of the job
Ward 5 is a 17-bedded male complex rehabilitation ward offering rehabilitation treatment of up-to 2 years to service users with severe and enduring mental health difficulties, often comorbid with alcohol and substance abuse. Your role would involve taking part in MDT meetings, assisting with formulations, providing psychologically-informed interventions and 1:1 therapeutic time to service users. Due to the longer-term treatment of up to 2 years, a key aspect of the role is to be able to form longer-term therapeutic relationships with service users and to become involved in delivering individual and group interventions aimed at helping them to better understand themselves, to better live with themselves and make the most of their potential. You would be supported by your supervisor, a principal clinical psychologist based on the ward for part of the week, and the MDT.
