Job summary

Are you passionate about perinatal mental health? Are you a qualified Nursery Nurse (CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Child Care and Education, BTEC National Diploma in Children's Care, Learning and Development or NVQ Level 3 in Children's Care, Learning and Development).

This is a rare opportunity to work in a unique and specialised area of childcare. The service provides a range of care packages for women experiencing a mental illness in pregnancy and up to 2 years postnatally. This includes, though is not limited to, a specialist holistic assessment of need for mother and infant, group work, tailored 1:1 therapies and advice to a range of professionals on the care and management of women suffering from a significant mental illness or at risk of developing a significant mental illness in the perinatal period. We often work very intensively with mothers at time when their need is very acute. Some of our families have very complex social circumstances and this needs sensitive handling alongside the management of the mental illness and the ongoing safeguarding of mother and infant.

Main duties of the job

  • Providing support and guidance with baby care, promoting mother infant attachment and collaboration with the mother on an individual care plan for the baby.
  • Contribute to and deliver support as detailed in the care plan
  • Provide 1:1 support in the mothers own home
  • Facilitate and co-facilitate mother/infant group work in a variety of community settings.
  • Communicate with relatives, psychiatrists, nurses, health care assistants, health visitors, midwives, children's social care and other external agencies.
  • Lead on and participate in therapeutic group work for mothers and their infants.

Job description

Job responsibilities

You will be supporting mothers with an acute perinatal mental illness being cared for in a community setting, with support from specialist perinatal mental health professionals. As a member of the community team, you will be part of the care plan for mother and infant, assisting with 1:1 support in the mothers own home and co-facilitating mother / infant group work in a variety of community settings. Our nursery nurses are required to work with both mother and baby providing support and guidance with baby care, promoting mother infant attachment and collaboration with the mother on an individualised care plan for the baby. The role requires regular communication with relatives, psychiatrists, nurses, health care assistants, health visitors, midwives, childrens social care and other external agencies. There are opportunities to lead on and participate in therapeutic group work as well as active participation in multi professional meetings relating to the mother and child.

As a service we are committed to providing regular and good quality supervision to our staff. We offer a comprehensive induction package, and care co-ordinators have the opportunity to undertake specialist perinatal mental health training both internally and externally.

Other main responsibilities:

Liaise with health visitors regarding appointments for primary care needs including infants 6 week checks and immunisations.

Works as a member of a multi-professional team providing direct/indirect care to one or more infants.

Creates a therapeutic relationship with parents to ensure their needs and wishes are considered when delivering individualised care to the infants.

Work as part of a team in a community perinatal setting, working with allocated mothers, fathers, older siblings and infants, providing increased levels of support where need identified

Ability to assess risky situations and safeguarding concerns and provide information to the care coordinator, duty nurse, psychiatrist.

To work alongside the Midwife and Health Visitors in providing advice, support and information to parents.

To work as an integrated member of the MDT, providing advice/opinions on the mother child relationship, infants development and to participate fully in decision making process regarding individual care plans.

To ensure the maintenance of a high standard of mental health, emotional support and physical health care as necessary to mothers and their infants during the mothers treatment for their mental health difficulties at the unit

To ensure that the wellbeing of infant remains paramount at all times.

To demonstrate sound clinical skills based on the principle of best practice, aimed at improving service users' relationship with their infant, inclusion into the community and the reduction of distress.

To formulate and develop complex care packages based on service user need without supervision to utilise interventions, in collaboration with mothers care plans devised by their care coordinator..
