Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Vascular Access Team at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust as a Healthcare Support Worker (Agenda for Change Band 3) for 37.5 hours per week
The post holder will receive comprehensive in-service training to develop and maintain the technical, clinical and clerical skills required to safely perform venepuncture, intravenous cannulation and the collection of blood samples, including from PICC lines and selected paediatric patients. Working across wards, clinics and outpatient departments, you will play a vital role in supporting timely diagnosis and treatment by providing high-quality blood samples in line with Trust policies and Standard Operating Procedures.
You will work both independently and as part of a supportive multidisciplinary team, ensuring accurate patient identification, maintaining dignity and confidentiality, and delivering compassionate care to a wide range of patients, including children, anxious and vulnerable individuals. The role also involves effective communication with medical, nursing and laboratory staff, stock control responsibilities, and adherence to health and safety, infection prevention and information governance standards.
This role is ideal for a motivated, flexible and caring individual who is keen to develop clinical skills within a busy NHS environment. Full training, supervision and ongoing development opportunities will be provided.
Main duties of the job
The Healthcare Support Worker will deliver a safe and efficient phlebotomy and cannulation service across wards, clinics and outpatient settings, undertaking venepuncture, intravenous cannulation and blood sample collection (including Peripheral Inserted Central Catheters) in line with training, competency and Trust policies. The role involves ensuring accurate patient identification, compliance with laboratory and blood transfusion procedures, and the timely delivery of high-quality samples to support patient care. The post holder will provide respectful, patient-centred care, work autonomously within scope of practice, communicate effectively with clinical and laboratory teams, and adhere to Standard Operating Procedures, infection prevention, health and safety and incident reporting requirements. The post holder is responsible for undertaking education, audit and surveillance associated with vascular access on a weekly basis. The post holder will maintain accurate clinical records every time they undertake clinical duties.
