Job summary
The Logistics Officer plays a key operational role within The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trusts Logistics Department, supporting the smooth and reliable flow of supplies that underpin safe and effective Patient care. The role is centred on professional, customerfocused logistics management, ensuring that clinical and nonclinical departments have the materials they need to function efficiently.
As part of the wider Procurement and Logistics function, the Logistics Officer contributes to maintaining a wellcoordinated supply chain, supporting Trust policies on product standardisation, cost efficiency, and quality. The role requires strong communication with clinical staff, procurement colleagues, suppliers, and managers across the organisation. It also involves active participation in team communication, supporting training for new personnel, and engaging in collaborative efforts to improve logistics processes.
The position sits within a structured reporting frameworkaccountable to the Logistics Supervisor and professionally to the Logistics Managerand forms part of a larger team responsible for ensuring safe storage, effective materials management, and adherence to governance, safety, and information standards across the Trusts supply environment. Ultimately, the Logistics Officer contributes directly to Patient care by ensuring the Trusts supply chain operates smoothly, safely, and responsively.
Main duties of the job
Stock control: ordering, receipting, checking deliveries, managing expiries, maintaining storage areas, and monitoring stock levels.
Systems use: operating handheld devices and IT systems (EDC, NHS Supply Chain) to record and transmit orders with accuracy.
Operational tasks: moving, transporting, and unpacking goods; handling heavy items; managing recycling; ensuring safe practice.
Communication: liaising with clinical teams, procurement staff, suppliers, delivery drivers, and budget holders to resolve issues, share updates, and support standardisation and costsaving initiatives.
Support for patient care: responding to urgent requests, advising on product alternatives, conducting stock reviews, and ensuring items are available and safely stored.
Governance & safety: following health and safety procedures (COSHH, PPE, incident reporting), safeguarding responsibilities, and Trust policies around confidentiality and data quality.
Service development: helping improve storage systems, aiding rationalisation of products, training new staff, and contributing to continuous improvement.
The role reports to the Logistics management, supports the wider Procurement Team, and is essential to ensuring efficient, safe, and reliable Logistics service across the Trust.
