Job summary
The Band 6 Nurse Team Leader plays a key role in delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care on our 27 bedded Care of the Elderly ward. You will provide visible clinical leadership, coordinating the daily running of the ward and ensuring high standards of practice for older adults with complex medical needs. As shift leader, you will manage staffing, allocate workload, support patient flow, and maintain clear communication with the multidisciplinary team.
You will use advanced assessment and decision making skills to plan and evaluate care for patients with frailty, dementia, longterm conditions, and acute illness. Recognising deterioration, escalating concerns, and supporting safe discharge planning are essential parts of the role. You will act as a mentor and role model, supervising junior staff, supporting learning, and contributing to appraisals and competency development.
Quality, safety, and governance are central to this position. You will help monitor standards, participate in audits, support incident review, and ensure compliance with infection prevention, safeguarding, medication safety, and documentation requirements. You will contribute to service improvement and promote a positive, supportive team culture.
Above all, you will champion dignity, respect, and person centred care, ensuring older adults and their families receive an excellent experience throughout their stay.

Main duties of the job
To be responsible for a large team of staff, including Staff Nurses, Nursing Associates, Health Care Support Workers, Student Nurses, apprentices and volunteers. To work closely with all members of the multi professional team to ensure that patients receive seamless care within the Trust and community. To provide specialist advice to support assessment, planning and implementation of care and where appropriate carry out specialist nursing procedures. To contribute to specialist education and training programmes for other staff and learners. To actively assist the Ward Manager, deputising in their absence, in maintaining a safe environment, whilst utilising the staff base to maximum efficiency.
