Job summary

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic dentist to join our motivated and supportive community dental team.

Our service prides itself on providing specialised clinical care for children, young people and adults with additional needs, including treatment under inhalation andIV sedation, as well as general anaesthesia - thus providing ideal opportunities for training and supporting career development.

We also have a number of postgraduate training posts within the service and value supporting the development of dentist within CDS in the region with links to regional dental hospitals.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work alongside the Consultants, Specialists and Dental Officers to deliver dental care to paediatric patients and adult patients with special care needs referred into the service.

The post holder will be based in main clinic sites providing high quality comprehensive dental care to identified special care priority groups, working within health centres and domiciliary settings. However, where the need arises the post holder maybe expected to also work in satellite clinics within the service as required.

As an experienced community dentist, the post holder will be a core asset of the team involved in delivering dental care including care under conscious sedation (inhalation and IV as part of anaesthetist led pathway) and under general anaesthesia.

As part of the role there will be opportunity to be involved in service development and clinical governance across the patch.

SCOPE AND RANGE

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of community dental services at a level 2 complexity. Dental care may be provided in community, hospital or domiciliary settings and a flexible approach will be required in responding to the clinical care needs of these patients. The post holder will provide training and demonstrate leadership in relation to Level 2 clinical oral health care.

The post holder will be based at either Rotherham Community Health Centre, The Flying Scotsman Health centre or New Street Health and Wellbeing Centre. The post holder may from time to time be expected to cover at clinics at alternative locations if the need arises.

Patient/Client Care

To provide high quality oral health care to community patients requiring comprehensive dental care in dental clinics, hospital and domiciliary settings. This will include the treatment of those with learning difficulties, challenging behaviour, complex medical histories, mobility problems, sensory disabilities, and other special needs to a level 2 complexity.

Undertakes thorough examination and assessment of patients, including treating children and adults with complex needs.

Plans and manages care where there are complex medical co-morbidities or the situation requires the involvement of other professionals and/or carers to resolve complex patient management issues.

To accept referrals for and provide comprehensive oral health care to include service users with Level 2 complexity of care.

Plans, develops and implements programmes to prevent disease and promote health in target groups within the population.

Can identify commonly occurring medical emergencies and lead the dental team in the appropriate first line management of the emergency, using appropriate techniques equipment and drugs.

Keeps up to date with developments in this area and/or able to advise other members of the team.

Takes responsibility for organising the training and resources for the acute management of medical emergencies within the service.

Uses appropriate local anaesthetic and patient management approaches to control pain and anxiety during dental treatment. This may include the use of sedation.

Responsible for organising training and resources in support of the availability of sedation in all or part of the service.

Maintains up to date knowledge of clinical dentistry operative procedures.

Undertakes the diagnosis, selection of appropriate periodontal techniques and delivery of periodontal care in an effective way.
