The Post
To deliver comprehensive range of clinical dental services and other activities as a senior dental officer for the community dental service. As detailed in NHS employers competencies for Band B senior dental officer.
Delivery of community dental care for residents of Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley and the surrounding areas.
SCOPE AND RANGE
The post holder will be responsible for the provision of community dental services at a level 2 complexity. Dental care may be provided in community, hospital or domiciliary settings and a flexible approach will be required in responding to the clinical care needs of these patients. The post holder will provide training and demonstrate leadership in relation to Level 2 clinical oral health care.
The post holder will be based at either Rotherham Community Health Centre, The Flying Scotsman Health centre or New Street Health and Wellbeing Centre. The post holder may from time to time be expected to cover at clinics at alternative locations if the need arises.
Patient/Client Care
To provide high quality oral health care to community patients requiring comprehensive dental care in dental clinics, hospital and domiciliary settings. This will include the treatment of those with learning difficulties, challenging behaviour, complex medical histories, mobility problems, sensory disabilities, and other special needs to a level 2 complexity.
Undertakes thorough examination and assessment of patients, including treating children and adults with complex needs.
Plans and manages care where there are complex medical co-morbidities or the situation requires the involvement of other professionals and/or carers to resolve complex patient management issues.
To accept referrals for and provide comprehensive oral health care to include service users with Level 2 complexity of care.
Plans, develops and implements programmes to prevent disease and promote health in target groups within the population.
Can identify commonly occurring medical emergencies and lead the dental team in the appropriate first line management of the emergency, using appropriate techniques equipment and drugs.
Keeps up to date with developments in this area and/or able to advise other members of the team.
Takes responsibility for organising the training and resources for the acute management of medical emergencies within the service.
Uses appropriate local anaesthetic and patient management approaches to control pain and anxiety during dental treatment. This may include the use of sedation.
Responsible for organising training and resources in support of the availability of sedation in all or part of the service.
Maintains up to date knowledge of clinical dentistry operative procedures.
Undertakes the diagnosis, selection of appropriate periodontal techniques and delivery of periodontal care in an effective way.
Routine exodontia and/or simple surgical exodontia.
Undertakes appropriate assessment of patients to determine the need for specialist advice.
Undertakes appropriate investigations during patient examination to determine the need for specialist advice in the management of the developing dentition.
Undertakes the diagnosis, selection of appropriate restorative technique and delivery of restoration or replacement of teeth in an effective way.
Undertakes a range of restorative techniques utilising developed skill resulting in more efficient delivery of restorative care.
Communicates with a range of patients and families on complex clinical issues and/or in difficult situations.
Communicates with the clinical team and peers in a range of clinical and/or leadership situations in a professional and appropriate manner, which inspires confidence, motivation and teamwork.
Communicates with other health and social care professionals on a range of issues relating to oral health and oral health care.
Communicates with a range of user groups of carers and families on complex clinical issues and/or in difficult situation.
Provide training and demonstrate leadership in relation to Level 2 clinical oral health care.
Responsible for the wider clinical environment, or has responsibilities for specific organisational or clinical issues within a service.
Has sufficient knowledge and experience of the legislative framework to provide advice or support on such matters to other members of the dental team.
Provides leadership and training in specific areas to a range of staff.
Understands responsibility for health and safety issues and can advise others in the service on these issues.
Has sufficient knowledge, confidence and experience to provide advice and/or support to colleagues or managers on ethical issues.
Involved in providing care which requires the application of sound ethical and professional principles in a more complex clinical, physical, social or intellectual context.
Demonstrates a professional clinical approach, including participation in appraisal, peer review, clinical audit and continuing professional development activities.
Has sufficient knowledge confidence and experience to appraise others or lead peer review, clinical audit or CPD activities.
Has sufficient knowledge, confidence and experience to deal professionally with issues of poor or underperformance in colleagues and other members of the dental team.
Organises clinical training programmes, delivers training and supports others in that role.
Keep comprehensive records and statistical records and complete statistical returns.
To support other clinicians within CDS in providing community dentistry, including accepting referrals, assisting in treatment planning and where necessary provision of dental care.
Provision of advice and emergency care to all groups of patients seen within the Community dental service.
KEY INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS
Information Management
To liaise with and provide specialist support for allied health professionals including dentists, dental auxiliaries, doctors, nurses, support workers and social workers involved in the dental care of special care adults.
To promote of the development and use of professionals complementary to dentistry.
Liaison with hospital and general dental service colleagues and other health and social services staff in order to co-ordinate the patient services provided by the CDS with those of other dental and general health services.
To be aware of and apply Trust policies and procedures within the scope of delegated responsibility.

Carry out such duties as may reasonably be required across the Trust.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
The provision of in-service training to the dental team.
To maintain professional knowledge and awareness of current dental issues, especially regarding community dentistry. Continuing post graduate education will be encouraged and supported, especially in the post holders area of special interest, consistent with service needs.
Contribute to the development of the knowledge and evidence base for delivering effective clinical care in community dentistry.
To be involved in assurances of achievement with local and national standards and quality indicators including those within the performance framework of the Care Quality Commission.
POLICY AND SERVICE DEVELOPMENT
To take a role in developing community dentistry services including providing strategic advice to the Clinical Director of CDS.
Participation in dental audit, clinical governance and service training events organised for all staff including the Trusts mandatory training programme.
These duties may require attendance at any of the Trusts dental clinics and other establishments for the purposes of service provision, in training, staff meetings and maintenance of services during periods of staff absence.
Participation in continuing professional development as required by regulation and personal requirements as highlighted during the development of personal development plan.
Participate, through the individual development review / appraisal process, in matching organisational aims with personal objectives.
To adapt flexibly to changes which occur in the service and assist in implementing such changes, as agreed with the commissioners.
Take responsibility for identifying risks, and taking action to control them as appropriate to the post.
To work to all policies and procedures in accordance with Trust guidelines including health & safety, patient confidentiality etc.
To take reasonable care for his/her own health and safety and that of other persons who may be affected by his/her acts or omissions. The post holder is also required to cooperate with supervisory and managerial staff to ensure that all relevant statutory regulations, policies, codes of practice and departmental safety procedures are adhered to and to attend mandatory training programmes provided by the employing Trust.
