Job summary

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is a busy unit of 13 gynaecology beds and 23 obstetric beds with approximately. 3000 deliveries per year.

The department offers an extensive range of specialty services including infertility, urogynaecology, colposcopy, outpatient hysteroscopy, ultrasound scanning and advanced minimal access surgery. We also provide a joint diabetic, endocrine clinic, recurrent miscarriage clinic and emergency gynae unit.

The Department is staffed by 12 Consultants, 2 Specialty Doctors, 1 CESR Fellow, 1 Senior Clinical Fellow (this post), 8 Specialty Registrars at ST3 and above, 1 ST1 and 6 GP trainees.

Main duties of the job

The post is ideal for candidates who have completed their specialist training (CCT) and are seeking further experience prior to applying for a consultant post.

The post is a fixed term appointment for 10 months. The Trust Senior Clinical Fellow is required to attend clinics and the operating theatre where he/she works under supervision by the Consultant and may at times be required to see/operate on pre-selected patients without direct supervision and support junior doctors yet to achieve entrustability for second on call and act as resident third on call.

Job responsibilities

OBSTETRICS

The Labour and Delivery Suite has Fourteen rooms in total, including high risk rooms, multi-purpose delivery/observation rooms, a high dependency room, a family bereavement room, a birthing pool, obstetric theatre and theatre recovery areas. A dedicated obstetric theatre is situated on Labour Ward. All accommodation are en-suite.

A new reception and waiting area has been established, along with a counselling room, improved office accommodation, a staff resource room and sitting room.

There are approximately 3000 deliveries undertaken within the Unit each year.

The Unit consists of an inpatient ward (Wharncliffe Ward) combining Antenatal and Postnatal care with a total of 24 obstetric beds, 3 of which are side wards. The Ward has a birth registration facility.

There is an Antenatal Day Ward facility and triage facility attached to the department.

There is a security system on Labour Suite and Antenatal/Postnatal Ward and Gynaecology Ward.

There is close liaison with the Special Care Baby Unit adjacent to the Labour Suite.

GYNAECOLOGY

The department provides a full range of gynaecological services including endocrine, recurrent miscarriage, urogynaecology, colposcopy, out-patient hysteroscopy/cystoscopy, advanced minimal access surgery, infertility, oncology, menopause, psychosexual, termination of pregnancy and general gynaecology.

The Gynaecology Ward, B11 has 14 beds. On average there are 1350 non-elective admissions per year.

Day cases are carried out in the day surgery centre which is shared with other specialties and has its own theatre suite.

The Endoscopy Unit accommodates colposcopy and other outpatient surgical procedures, including diagnostic hysteroscopy, a one stop postmenopausal bleeding clinic and cystoscopy.

Pregnancy Advisory Service

The Pregnancy Advisory Service is situated next to the gynaecology ward.

PAS has 4 private rooms (for women undergoing a medical termination for reasons led by the HAS 1 from), 2 counselling / consulting rooms and 1 treatment room for examinations scans and venepuncture.

Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit

The nurse/midwife-led unit is situated next to the gynaecology ward.

Although the unit is nurse/midwife led, there is a Junior StR and a Senior StR (Registrar level) allocated to the unit.

EPAU treats women with bleeding in early pregnancy, history of recurrent miscarriage, high risk e.g. History of diabetes, epilepsy or heart problems, previous tubal problems, ectopic pregnancy, previous pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis and recurrent miscarriages.

Greenoaks Clinic

Due to the growing demand for services within Obstetrics and Gynaecology, an Antenatal and Gynaecological Outpatients Suite was recently developed within the Hospital grounds.

The unit accommodates general and specialist antenatal clinics, general gynaecology and specialist clinics for endocopic procedures, colposcopy, psychosexual, endocrine, recurrent miscarriage, infertility, urogynaecology, oncology and menopausal problems.

MEDICAL STAFF:

The Medical Staffing establishment of the Department is for: -

Twelve Consultants

Three Specialty Doctors

Seven Specialty Registrars (ST3 and above); rotating within the region

One ST1/2 Trainees

Six GP/VTS Trainees

Principal Relationships with other Staff

Liaison with Midwifery and Nursing staff for treatment of patients in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit and other specialties and staff as necessary to undertake the full range of duties and responsibilities of the post.

The Senior Clinical Fellow acts within the Department as second on call with the responsibilities. He/she is directly responsible to the Consultant for the day to day management of the patients. He/she must direct the junior doctors to ensure that this takes place with care, consideration and efficiency.

The Senior Clinical Fellow is required to attend clinics and the operating theatre where he/she works under supervision by the Consultant but may at times be required to see/operate on pre-selected patients without direct supervision.

On-call/Full Shift duties
