Maternity Support Worker - Community

22.5 hours per week

We are looking to recruit a Maternity Support Worker join our Midwifery team in the community of Rotherham. You will work across the maternity unit with cross-cover as needed, while developing a specialist skill portfolio aligned to your main area.

Key responsibilities:

  • Deliver compassionate, family centred support to birthing people, partners, and newborns, respecting feeding choices.
  • Recognise and help prevent maternal/neonatal illness; escalate concerns to a midwife.
  • Perform and record maternal observations (temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, blood pressure, urinalysis).
  • Obtain and document maternal carbon monoxide (CO) levels; give brief smoking cessation advice and refer as appropriate.
  • Collect newborn heel prick capillary samples and complete documentation.
  • Undertake venepuncture for birthing people within competence and training.
  • Maintain accurate records; confidently use multiple clinical IT systems to input and retrieve data.
  • Contribute to a clean, safe environment; support stock and clinic/community workflow.
  • Work collaboratively with midwives and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrate Compassion, clear communication, attention to detail, and sound judgment in escalation.
  • Flexibility across community and acute settings, able to drive and perform home visits across the Rotherham area.
  • Willingness to train and maintain required competencies.

Main duties of the job

  • Assist the Midwife with the holistic care of the birthing person and family
  • Obtain capillary sample of blood via heel prick and completing documentation as appropriate.
  • Following initial assessment by a midwife and their development of a care plan undertake routine healthy baby observations in the hospital and community reporting any abnormalities to the midwife (this includes calculating the % of birth weight gained or lost and escalating as appropriate).
  • Be competent in all aspects of infant feeding support.
  • Undertake, record maternal vital signs such as temperature, pulse, urinalysis
  • screening, respiratory rate and blood pressure and report any concerns to the
  • midwife. This also includes the obtaining and documenting of Co levels of the birthing person and giving brief intervention support to stop smoking.
  • Undertake, recognise and interpret billirubinometer readings for babies with signs of jaundice. With the understanding of when to escalate the results to a Midwife
  • Perform Glucose tolerance tests and supporting and liaising with midwives.
