Main duties of the job
As a Consultant in Hand and Wrist Surgery at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, you will play a key role in delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care to patients with a wide range of upper limb conditions. Your responsibilities will span clinical, educational, and service development domains, ensuring a well-rounded and fulfilling role within the department.
Clinical Responsibilities
Provide expert assessment, diagnosis, and surgical management of hand and wrist conditions, including both elective and trauma cases. Participate in the general trauma rota, contributing to the Trusts emergency orthopaedic service. Collaborate closely with fellow consultants, anaesthetists, nursing staff, and allied health professionals to ensure coordinated and patient-centred care. Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in line with Trust policies and national standards.

The Rotherham Trauma and Orthopaedics department is a very friendly forward-looking department with 16 consultants
We are supported by one Associate Specialist, Mr Rocha and a further Orthopaedic Consultant, Mr Saeed Ali. The other doctors/ANPs within the department include by four SAS grades, five STRs, two Wrightington Fellows, six ANPs (Advanced Nurse Practitioners), one FY2, two FY1s, and five Junior Clinical Fellows.
The department has two wards for their patients, Fitzwilliam for Trauma and Rockingham ward for elective admissions. We have 20 ring-fenced beds in Rockingham ward for the elective patients.
The Rotherham Foundation Trust is part of a new surgical Orthopaedic centre of excellence - Mexborough Elective Orthopaedic Centre. This is a collaborative project with local hospitals within the ICS and is part of our elective orthopaedic surgical capacity.
The department prides itself in providing the best teaching and training atmosphere for the Resident doctors. Two of our consultants have won the regional Trainer of the Year award. Mr Kocheta is the Director of Medical Education for the Trust, Mr Wembridge is an FRCS examiner and Mr Paniker is an examiner for the British Hand Diploma. Mr Halsey is the chair of the AO Hand and Wrist trauma courses, Mr Garneti initiated the South Yorkshire Orthopaedic Courses (www.syoc.co.uk) and Mr Kocheta runs the upper limb trauma course (www.upperlimbtrauma.org). There is weekly Thursday lunchtime teaching supported by consultants.
The arthroplasty unit perform uni-compartment, total knee replacements and total hip replacements as day surgery procedures. The department were double finalists for the HSJ 2019 awards for the work done to reduce mortality in patients with neck of femur fractures.
The department works closely with the MSK triage services to improve the referral pathways for our patients. We have also recently successfully implemented the virtual fracture clinic in our department.
The Post
The consultant surgeon will join the unit in providing a first-class hand and wrist surgery service to the people of Rotherham. They will also assist in a general on-call service as a part of the general trauma on-call rota. They are expected to be competent in both adult and paediatric general trauma. They will be encouraged to develop their special interest and expected to support the department in governance and audit matters.
The consultant surgeon will be expected to work at Mexborough Orthopaedic Elective Centre (MEOC) as their primary operative location although lists may also be allocated at the Rotherham acute hospital site.
The consultant surgeon is expected to be involved in the hand trauma service for the people of Rotherham and South Yorkshire and participate in MDT working which includes complex MDT meetings.
Leadership and Service Development
Contribute to the ongoing development of the hand and wrist service, including pathway design, innovation, and quality improvement initiatives. Support the departments clinical governance programme through participation in audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, and risk management processes. Take an active role in departmental meetings and strategic planning discussions.
Education and Training
Provide supervision, mentorship, and teaching to junior doctors, medical students, and other healthcare professionals. Participate in local and regional teaching programmes, and contribute to the development of training materials and sessions. Support the Trusts commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.
Research and Innovation
Engage in clinical research and audit projects, with opportunities to collaborate with academic partners and contribute to publications or presentations. Promote evidence-based practice and support the introduction of new techniques or technologies where appropriate.
