Job responsibilities
The Department
The department consists of 14 Consultants and are supported by Associate Specialist, Specialty Doctors, Higher Specialty trainees, Senior Clinical Fellows, Core Trainee, GP trainees, Junior Clinical Fellows, Foundation Year Two and Foundation Year One trainees.
We have a strong CNS team supporting cancer patients and pathways.
We serve our patients with straight to test services, a busy endoscopy unit, strong peri-operative care and where required critical care including high dependency provision.
Inpatient provision is within dedicated surgical wards. Our Acute Surgical Unit is situated adjacent to Surgical SDEC and we have good pathways for patients with acute surgical problems. We have an elective ward with an impressively short length of stay and a dedicated acute ward shared with our urology service.
The links with other trusts in the locality benefit the department with a hub and spoke model for MDT working with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and Weston Park the tertiary centre and a shared gastroenterology department with Barnsley Hospital.
The Post
A Specialty Doctor in General Surgery plays a pivotal role in delivering high-quality surgical care across both elective and emergency services. Working closely with consultant surgeons, senior clinical fellows and trainees, the Specialty Doctor supports the full continuum of patient care - ranging from assessment and diagnosis to operative and postoperative management. The post is based at Rotherham Hospital and includes 12 programmed activities under Care Group 2.
The primary clinical responsibilities include the management of both inpatients and outpatients under the supervision of consultant colleagues. This encompasses initial assessment, development of treatment plans, and active participation in surgical procedures. The role requires regular contributions to the departments on-call rota, providing essential support during acute admissions, emergencies, offering advice and care coordination during major incidents.
Teaching and supervision are integral components of the role. The Specialty Doctor is expected to take an active part in the education and oversight of resident medical staff and junior doctors, including Foundation Year trainees and clinical fellows. This includes clinical teaching, supervision during procedures and contribution to training assessments and feedback.
In addition to clinical duties, the post-holder is expected to engage in quality improvement initiatives through audit and clinical governance activities. This involves identifying areas for service enhancement, contributing to audits and helping to implement evidence-based changes. The Specialty Doctor will also be involved in management and service development activities alongside the Divisional Senior Team working to modernise care delivery and optimise departmental efficiency.
The role also demands a collaborative approach with multi-disciplinary teams, including specialist nurses, ACPs and administrative staff. Active involvement in multidisciplinary team meetings - particularly for cancer care and peri-operative management - is essential to ensure comprehensive, patient-centred care.
In summary, the Specialty Doctor in General Surgery provides vital clinical, educational and managerial support within a dynamic and forward-looking surgical department. Their contribution is key to maintaining high standards of care, developing junior medical staff and enhancing the overall performance and adaptability of surgical services.
