Job summary

Applicants are invited for the post of Speciality Doctor in Ophthalmology at Rotherham NHS Trust. We are looking for an enthusiastic doctor for the post of speciality doctor within a well-established Ophthalmology service.

As a Specialty Doctor in our dynamic Ophthalmology department, you will contribute to a high-performing multidisciplinary team providing care across subspecialties including cataract, glaucoma, oculoplastics, medical retina, corneal, and paediatric ophthalmology. With over 44,000 outpatient attendances annually and a modern surgical suite, we pride ourselves on achieving outcomes that consistently exceed national benchmarks.

Main duties of the job

Responsibilities include general, specialist clinics, cataract clinics, eye casualty and theatre sessions, on call duties

Job description

Job responsibilities

The Department

The department consists of 7 consultants and 4 Speciality Doctors. There are 2 trainees rotating through training posts. There are four specialist nurses practising in advanced roles such as cataract clinics, post-operative cataracts and glaucoma clinics. We have AHPs working in Orthoptist roles. The department is also supported by an eye clinic liaison officer and a medical photography team.

The department sees 44,000 patients in an outpatient capacity each year and we have clinics in oculoplastic, paediatric ophthalmology, medical retina, diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, cataract, and corneal sub-specialty areas. A sub specialty interest to complement the existing subspecialties is welcomed.

The Post

The majority of our outpatient clinics take place at the modern Rotherham Community Health Centre in Rotherham town centre.

Surgical work predominantly takes place in the theatre suite at the main Rotherham Hospital site. More than 90 percent of our surgery is carried out under local anaesthetic as day surgery cases and the department is well supported by the day surgery unit.

Cataract, glaucoma surgery, laser surgery, squint surgery, corneal grafts, oculoplastic surgery and other ocular operations are undertaken. The success rates of cataract surgery undertaken at the Trust are higher than the national rates and the complication rates of surgery are a lot less than the national ones. We are a modern department with state-of-the-art surgical equipment.

The department is supported by Service Manager - Mr Mike Flint and Matron - Tracy Goldstone.

Departmental educational, governance and clinical business meetings occur monthly. The weekly educational programme is inclusive and robust and supports strong team working. Nominated educational supervisors support trainees within the department, with the oversight of the College Tutor.

The post is based at Rotherham Community Health Centre, which is part of The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust.

The post holder will work under the supervision of the Consultants in outpatients and operating theatres at Rotherham Community Health Centre, and Rotherham General Hospital. Elective and Non Elective in-patient services are provided at Rotherham General Hospitals. When on-call for emergencies out of normal working hours been resident on site at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust is not mandatory but must be on site within 15 minutes.

The post holder is encouraged to carry out Clinical Audit and potentially research activities as an inherent part of normal clinical duties. There are opportunities to provide teaching and training roles within Yorkshire and Humber Deanery for Postgraduates. There are also opportunities to develop BMS staff towards Advanced Practitioner roles.

It will be a requirement of the post to maintain CPD activity (supported by funded study leave) to achieve Royal College compliance with the CPD programme.

The on call commitment will be 1:5

The new appointee will take on the responsibility and development of specialities/multidisciplinary team meetings relevant to their interests, and subject to the needs of the Department in negotiation with the Head of Department. The Department is keen to support any key interests that a Specialty Doctor may have and encourages personal and departmental development to support the service.

There are opportunities for the successful applicant to participate in other areas if the service has an input to its development.

To participate in the effective running of the department, contributing to an equitable share of workload and facilities. To engage in the efficient use of staff and resources for the development of the service in support of changing needs of patients and clinical users within the trust and the network and in the context of the Trust Quality Improvement programme.
