Alcohol Nurse Specialist

An exciting opportunity has become available to work within the Rotherham Alcohol Liaison Team based at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust. The Alcohol Nurse specialist will be responsible for the care and treatment of patients who require a comprehensive Alcohol assessment. Delivering a whole needs approach to facilitate appropriate levels of care for patients including complex needs. Implementing measures which support reduction in presentations, acute admissions reductions, shorter lengths of stay, and promote recovery.

The post holder will predominantly work across the acute trust, assessing patients who are referred for brief interventions, complex case management including Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome, seizures and delirium tremens.

This service has become highly regarded both locally and nationally due to the extensive care and support delivered to enabling patients who are assessed have safer care and support 7 days a week.

Main duties of the job

  • Having the passion and understanding to support patients who are referred for assessment takes a special person, understanding both health detriments and the nature of dependency.
  • Patients often feel judged and at times have no one else to talk to which makes a difference having someone to speak with in a safe environment who can support and help make a difference.
  • Comprehensive initial assessments and daily patient reviews form most of the working day which involves liaison with multiple health care professionals internally and externally to the trust. The service has a strong relationship with the Mental Health liaison service on site as well as with the community Alcohol and drug services who provide an in-reach worker for referrals to community services Mon-Friday.
  • Telephone support is an integral part of the role for all staff particularly as we offer a 7 day service across a longer working day, this can make so much difference when patients are in need and can often avert a crisis.
  • This post brings new learning every day and can be extremely rewarding when positive change is seen
