Job summary
Applications are invited for a Specialty Doctor in a substantive full-time post in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, based at Rotherham General Hospital. The successful applicant would join a close-knit team of permanent staff of three Consultant Surgeons and two Trust Doctors (Specialty Doctor level) in the OMFS department. A special interest and previous experience of delivering a Paediatric Exodontia service would be beneficial.
Main duties of the job
The main duties would consist of: OMFS out-patient clinics, Minor Oral Surgery operating lists, Occasional Day Surgery operating lists, Delivery of the Paediatric Exodontia service, Involvement in supervision, support and education of the junior staff and Involvement in the Clinical Effectiveness and Governance activity within the department.

Job responsibilities
The department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust delivers specialist elective surgical treatments to patients from the Rotherham area, providing in-patient and day surgery operating, out-patient Minor Oral Surgery, and out-patient clinics at Rotherham General Hospital. In addition, the department provides a specialist OMFS emergency service for patients from the catchment areas of Rotherham, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals.
The Maxillofacial Surgery Unit at Rotherham General Hospital treats the full spectrum of OMFS diagnoses. Special interests within the department are head and neck cancer surgery, salivary gland surgery, including the management of salivary gland calculi using sialoendoscopy, orthognathic surgery, the surgical management of skin cancers of the head and neck, and implant surgery. In addition, the department treats a large volume of maxillofacial trauma, and the consultants in the department are experienced in the use of up-to-date techniques such as orbital reconstruction using custom-made orbital implants, and the management of fractures of the mandibular condyle with endoscopically assisted fixation. Approximately 350 emergency cases are operated on in the department each year.
Patients with head and neck mucosal malignancy are diagnosed in the outpatients department at Rotherham. Minor H+N cancer surgery is carried out at Rotherham Hospital, and patients who require major Head and Neck cancer surgery are treated at the Head and Neck Cancer surgical centre at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.
Children who require dental extractions under general anaesthesia are treated in the purpose-built Poswillo Unit minor surgery suite at Rotherham General Hospital.
The Post
The post is a full-time substantive post, based at Rotherham General Hospital, following the retirement of the current post-holder.
The post-holder would be required to deliver the GA Paediatric Exodontia service for the Rotherham area, in addition to providing routine OMFS outpatients clinics, minor oral surgery lists and occasional day surgery operating lists.
The post-holder would also be expected to be involved in providing support, supervision and education for the eight Dental Core Trainees in the department and playing an active part in the Clinical Effectiveness and Governance agenda in the department.
The post does not have a regular on-call commitment.
