The Deputy Lead Nurse for the Paediatric Urgent and Emergency Care Centre (UECC) will support the Lead Nurse in the operational and clinical leadership of the department. The post holder will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based, family-centred care. They will act as a role model, providing expert clinical knowledge and ensuring safe, effective, and timely care for children and young people accessing emergency services.

Main duties of the job

As Deputy Lead Nurse in the Paediatric UECC, the post holder will support the Lead Nurse in the day-to-day management of the department, providing expert clinical care and advice in the assessment and treatment of acutely unwell children. They will act as a visible and accessible senior nurse within the clinical area, ensuring all nursing care is evidence-based and delivered to the highest standard. Operationally, they will assist in staff coordination to maintain safe staffing levels and appropriate skill mix, manage clinical incidents, complaints, and feedback, and deputise for the Lead Nurse as required. In terms of education and development, the Deputy Lead Nurse will mentor and support junior staff and students, facilitate ongoing training opportunities, and foster a culture of continuous professional development. They will also play a key role in governance and quality improvement by participating in audits and service development initiatives, ensuring adherence to policies and regulatory standards (such as CQC and NICE), and contributing to performance monitoring and improvement. Effective collaboration and communication will be essential, as the Deputy Lead Nurse will work closely with paediatricians, A&E staff, and community services to ensure a seamless patient journey, maintain clear communication with children and families, and represent the department in various meetings and professional forums.
