Job summary

A position has arisen in the Microbiology department at The Rotherham Foundation Trust for an enthusiastic hard working Biomedical Scientist (AfC Band 7). The successful applicant will be HCPC registered and have relevant qualifications including an accredited BSc and significant Microbiology laboratory experience. They should have relevant experience at band 7 including-bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, molecular and serology as they will be expected to supervise/work in each of these sections on a rotational basis. The Rotherham Foundation Trust is currently one of five Trusts involved in the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Transformation Programme. The aim is to design a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory services that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients. The service will also be efficient and sustainable, encourage research and development in collaboration with Academia and Industry to improve health in the region and provide rewarding jobs and career opportunities for all staff. The Transformation Programme may include the consolidation of some services. Teams will be included and communicated with and on proposals that may involve them.

Main duties of the job

The department is a busy routine Microbiology laboratory and works in partnership with the Microbiology department at Barnsley to offer a comprehensive service to both hospital and GP patients in the Barnsley and Rotherham areas. The department is fully UKAS and IBMS accredited and is well equipped with instrumentation including the Bact/Alert Blood culture and Mycobacteria culture systems, Vitek, Vitek MS/MYLA, VIDAS and DS2 analysers, Hologic Panther, Qiagen QIAstat and BD max molecular platforms. The applicant must be able to fully participate in the departments out of hours service, including weekend and Bank Holiday working, late duty working and on-call when required. They will also be expected to take responsibility for the management of laboratory QC and be conversant with susceptibility techniques and guidelines and be able to evidence a hands on approach to analyser as well as IT (winpath) knowledge and Health & Safety.
