Job summary
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated HCPC registered Senior Biomedical Scientist who is professional, reliable and flexible to join our friendly and hardworking team for a part time (0.8WTE) 12 month fixed term contract.
Biochemistry at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust is part of the Blood Sciences department of Barnsley and Rotherham Integrated Laboratory Services (BRILS). We offer a wide range of diagnostic testing facilities for Rotherham and Barnsley Hospitals, local GP practices and other NHS laboratories. The department is fully accredited to ISO15189 standards and is an IBMS accredited training laboratory for registration and specialist portfolios.
We are fully automated with Siemens Atellica equipment consisting of Chemistry and Immunoassay analysers. In addition, the Department provides an range of HPLC testing, including vitamin and urine biogenic amine analysis. All the analysers are linked to the Clinisys WinPath Enterprise LIMS system.
The successful candidate must be registered with the HCPC and hold the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry. They must also have completed or be working towards a Masters degree in a relevant subject (or equivalent). The candidate must have excellent knowledge of routine Biochemistry, with relevant experience, ideally at band 6 level. This role will primarily be managing and maintaining the Specialist Chemistry section of the laboratory, so experience and knowledge of HPLC is essential.
Main duties of the job
Maintain and Manage the Specialist Biochemistry section of the laboratory, involving the following assays:
o Vitamin A&E
o Vitamin B1 and B6
o Vitamin C
o Catecholamines
o Metanephrines
o 5HIAA/VMA
o Faecal Calprotectin
o Xanthochromia
Maintain and update relevant departmental SOPs and Training documents as required.
Be involved in maintaining the current QMS system (QPulse) with document renewal, non-conformances, asset module and audit.
To be involved with the training and development of staff (e.g. portfolios, CPD, lunchtime seminars)
Rotate into the automated section of the laboratory as required, with the potential to assist in covering the OOH service if necessary.
To work independently with accuracy and precision to ensure equipment and records are maintained according to laboratory SOPs.
To work safely in accordance with Health and Safety guidelines to protect yourself and others and act as one of the departmental H&S officers, ensuring a safe work environment for all staff and visitors.
To work in accordance with information governance and confidentiality guidelines to ensure no patient information is given to unauthorised personnel.
To work closely with other member of the laboratory team of varying grades to produce an excellent service for staff and users.
