Job summary

This post sits within the Medical Director Directorate and is accountable to the Executive via the Associate Medical Director Medical Education (AMD-ME).

The post-holder will provide:

Support and guidance to Associate Specialist and Specialty (SAS) doctors/dentists in the Trust, in collaboration with their Lead Consultant and the AMD-ME;

Leadership in both the professional development of SAS doctors/dentists and the contribution of SAS doctors/dentists to education and training of trainees in relevant specialties.

Main duties of the job

Among the important tasks for this role are:

To provide support to SAS doctors in relation to their development needs where required

To identify specialties where SAS development requires improvement

To assist the AMD-ME in providing a quality assessment of the Trusts support of SAS doctor / dentists development by developing and providing an SAS-centric perspective

To support the development of SAS doctors / dentists as Educational and Clinical Supervisors

Job responsibilities

Among the important tasks for this role are:

1.To provide support to SAS doctors in relation to their development needs where required:

Advise Medical Director / AMD-ME on specific needs for SAS doctors / dentists for the current appraisal system and future revalidation processes.

Provide each SAS doctor / dentist with at least one opportunity per annum to review their experience, developmental objectives and needs and where necessary provide or engage appropriate further support as part of ongoing appraisal.

Identify SAS doctors / dentists who require further support to obtain their development needs and assist in identifying the appropriate support in collaboration as necessary with the AMD-ME and Health Education England.

Advice and support to SAS colleagues wishing to apply for specialist registration via CESR (Article 14) route.

Develop the Rotherham SAS CPD programme.

Utilise and develop the medical education website for benefit of SAS colleagues.

Review as necessary the induction processes for new SAS doctors / dentists.

2.To identify specialties where SAS development requires improvement:

Work with the MD, AMD-ME and other appropriate personnel in the ongoing development of a strategy for the provision of the development of SAS doctors / dentists across the Trust.

If appropriate to use SAS feedback to identify specialties within the Trust where more structured development for SAS doctors / dentists is required.

Work with the AMD-ME, Lead Clinicians, Medical Director and the Medical Workforce Department to assist specialties to address areas that require improvement.

Advise and support all SAS colleagues so they have meaningful appraisal folders and revalidation documentation.

3.To assist the AMD-ME in providing a quality assessment of the Trusts support of SAS doctor / dentists development by developing and providing an SAS-centric perspective:

Provide structured feedback from SAS doctors/dentists on the strengths and weaknesses of the CPD opportunities.

Contribute this feedback and other relevant information to the Medical Education Committee.

Meet regularly with the AMD-ME.

4.To support the development of SAS doctors / dentists as Educational and Clinical Supervisors:

Assist in identifying and delivering the developmental requirements of SAS colleagues for their role as educators and assessors.

Represent the Trust, both internally and externally on medical education issues relating to SAS staff.

Work with AMD-ME, Consultants, clinical leads, specialty tutors and educational supervisors to develop the educational opportunities for SAS staff.
