An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated, enthusiastic team player to work within the Rotherham 0-19 service as Breastfeeding Support Worker. This is a rewarding position, working across a range of community settings supporting families to make informed decisions about infant feeding in the antenatal and postnatal period.

You will work closely with health and local authority colleagues to provide a range of services to support and promote breastfeeding across the Rotherham Borough. As an integral part of the Rotherham Infant Feeding Team you will support the implementation of the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly standards and contribute to the development of initiatives to embed the standards across the service.

You will have excellent verbal and written communication skills to be able to provide telephone, face to face and group support to pregnant and breast feeding women and their families coupled with good IT skills to record all of your client interactions using our electronic health record system.

You will be highly organised, efficient and flexible with the ability to prioritise your workload to meet individual and team objectives. Clinical support of breastfeeding is fundamental to the role, therefore you must have undertaken an accredited Peer Support Course and have experience in advising pregnant women and supporting new mothers to breastfeed and maintain lactation.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will be a role model for high standards in infant feeding support in line with the Baby Friendly standards, ensuring that infant feeding advice and care is based on current evidence, guidelines, and policies.
  • Competent to support families in their chosen method of feeding giving clear and consistent information on infant feeding
  • Manage the Infant Feeding System One referral inbox, ensuring tasks are prioritised and seen in a timely manner.
  • Able to recognise feeding difficulties and be capable to provide support and know when to escalate feeding difficulties.
  • They will be a competent, self-motivated individual, working as a member of the team, supporting colleagues within Public Health Nursing and across the early help system, including Family Hubs.

  • Recognised/accredited Breastfeeding Peer Support Training programme
  • Due to the nature of the role it is essential that applicants are able to travel independently across the county and have access to a suitable vehicle for business purposes. If necessary, adjustments can be considered in accordance with the Equality Act 2010.
