Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and experienced individual to join the Pathology Services Management Team for Barnsley and Rotherham Integrated Laboratory Services (BRILS).

The laboratories are focussed on two sites at Rotherham Hospital and Barnsley Hospital, both within easy reach of the M1 and A1. The departments are fully UKAS accredited (ISO15189 standard) and an IBMS accredited training laboratory. We currently have the CliniSys Enterprise LIMS. The Laboratories are well equipped having analysers, tracking, robotics and automated storage that are interfaced to the LIMS, some via middleware. Staff are actively encouraged to participate in CPD and training activities and annual appraisals are performed.

The main responsibility of the IT Manager is the maintenance and development of the various Pathology IT System components, working across the disciplines of Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Clinical Chemistry, Immunology, (collectively Blood Sciences), Microbiology and Cellular Pathology (including the Mortuary). The Laboratory Information Management system is due to be upgraded and you will be a key individual in the implementation of this. The post is hosted at Barnsley Hospital but the successful candidate must also work at our partner laboratory in Rotherham, providing Pathology informatics expertise across BRILS.

Main duties of the job

You must have knowledge of the major Pathology disciplines, educated to MSc or equivalent level, having excellent organisation, communication and influencing skills. You must have an understanding of clinical systems and the interaction between Pathology and other clinical systems. You must have extensive experience of working with Pathology Systems (including interfacing), our current systems being Winpath Enterprise, ICE and DAWN and Trust systems Medway and Meditech. Candidates must have a thorough grasp of Pathology IT related rule writing and be able to manipulate systems to produce statistics.

The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust is one of five Trusts involved in the formation of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Network. The aim of the Network is to deliver a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients. A collaborative Network will also provide rewarding job and career opportunities for all staff. An Outline Business Case, which described the Target Operating Model for the future Network, has been agreed between Partner Trusts. The proposed Target Operating Model will ultimately lead to the consolidation of services across SYB. As work progresses to establish the Network, staff will be consulted about proposals that may involve them.
