Job summary
To work collaboratively as an integral part of the midwifery team.
To assist and support the midwife in the care of the mother and baby throughout the pregnancy and postnatal period.
To support and promote breastfeeding; this will focus on the needs of individuals and the community, respecting diversity and equality. This will include health promotion and the prevention of ill health.
To deliver high standards of physical, psychological and social aspects of care under the supervision of, and being accountable to, a registered midwife.
To carry out administrative duties as required by the infant feeding midwifery team.
Main duties of the job
To share impartial, evidence-based information about infant feeding with antenatal and postnatal women to enable them to make a fully informed choice as to how they feed and care for their babies in accordance with the Trust Infant Feeding Policy, associated guidelines, and Baby Friendly Standards.
Support mothers experiencing difficulties with infant feeding using evidence-based practice, working closely with midwives, maternity support workers, neonatal/paediatric teams, healthy family teams, and infant feeding specialists.
Assist midwives and infant feeding specialists to care for babies with complex and challenging feeding problems including those not latching at the breast, jaundice, excessive weight loss up to the age of 28 days and tongue tie up to the age of 6 weeks. This will include managing referrals from the community via the specialist service pathway and tongue tie clinic.
To maintain quality standards by working to policies, procedures and guidelines.
Undertake a range of physical measurements and assessments for babies, recording and reporting results to appropriate professionals.
To assist the midwife in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care.
To support the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative within NUH, undertaking staff and mother audits and assisting with staff training where necessary.
