Higher Medical Laboratory Assistant

Job summary

The post holder will provide support to the scientific and medical staff of the department. The main duties of the role are to:

Undertake laboratory-based work including the analysis of samples using various technologies. This may be located in any of the department's sections.

Perform sample reception duties including the receipt, barcode labelling and preparation of samples for analysis

Perform clerical tasks including data input of patient demographics and test request information

Perform general housekeeping duties including maintaining stock levels, general cleaning and waste disposal

Working hours are Monday to Friday (inc Bank Holidays) 7.00 a.m. to 18.45 p.m and Saturday 08:00 to 16.15. The post holder will be expected to work 5 days a week covering a Monday to Saturday service on a rotational basis. The department provides a rota 3 months in advance to allow flexibility and support work/life balance. You will be required to work in the Histopathology laboratories on both QMC and City Hospital NUH Campuses.

The ability to work well in a team and be able to communicate effectively with others is of paramount importance. In this support role there is also a requirement for an amount of manual handling.

  • NVQ level 3 in Clinical Laboratory Support or equivalent, e.g. 2 science A levels or above

  • Transferrable skills
